Of the tools on this list, the best AI for SEO work is ChatGPT, followed closely by Claude. Gemini and Perplexity then follow. We rank them by three things an SEO needs: official SEO data, documented crawler controls and a coding agent. Our page on the best AI for marketing covers SEO data, image generation and work inside your mail and documents.
This page is about SEO work rather than writing posts. For a content workflow, however, our list of the best AI for blogging ranks tools differently.
Best AI for SEO: The Short Answer
Among the best AI for SEO on this list, ChatGPT and Claude both meet all three checks. Both connect to Semrush officially, both document separate crawlers for training and for search, and both include a coding agent. ChatGPT ranks first only on our tie-break, its cheaper $8 Go tier.
Gemini and Perplexity fit narrower jobs. Gemini offers Google’s free Antigravity CLI for technical work, while Perplexity suits quick, cited research. However, neither has an official SEO data connector in the sources behind our reviews.

How We Ordered the Best AI for SEO
This list of the best AI for SEO counts three documented checks. First comes an official connector to Semrush or Ahrefs data, announced by the tool maker or the SEO company. Next come documented crawler controls, and last comes a coding agent that can edit templates and structured data.
ChatGPT and Claude meet all three, so the tie-break from our list of the best AI tools applies. That means review score first, then the lower entry price. Gemini, meanwhile, meets two and Perplexity one. Microsoft Copilot meets none in our sources, so it comes last.
1. ChatGPT: Semrush Inside the Chat, Plus Codex
Semrush launched an official app for ChatGPT on December 17, 2025, which brings keyword and traffic data into the chat. Ahrefs also lists an app in ChatGPT, a guide from Carly reports. Both, however, need their own subscriptions.
OpenAI documents separate crawlers, as our guide to ChatGPT for SEO explains. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps a site out of ChatGPT’s search answers, while GPTBot only governs training. Codex, meanwhile, handles technical fixes, and its sandbox keeps network access off by default.
2. Claude: The Semrush Connector and Claude Code
Semrush launched an official connector for Claude on August 26, 2026, for Semrush One and SEO Classic subscribers. Anthropic also documents three crawlers: ClaudeBot for training, Claude-SearchBot for search and Claude-User for user requests.
Claude Code, on Pro and Max, edits site code and starts with read-only access. Its top entry also leads Artificial Analysis’s coding agent comparison, as our list of the best AI for coding covers. Our guide to Claude for SEO covers the details.

3. Gemini: Free Technical Tools, No SEO Connector
Google’s Antigravity CLI, which replaced Gemini CLI for free and Google AI accounts on June 18, 2026, is free with a smaller quota, several guides report. As a result, it suits template and markup work on a budget. Google-Extended also controls whether Google trains Gemini on your pages, without affecting Search, according to several SEO guides.
The catch: the sources behind our reviews show no official Semrush or Ahrefs connector for Gemini. Details are in our Gemini review.
4. Perplexity: Cited Research for SEO Questions
Perplexity cites every answer, so it is useful for competitor and topic research. Our list of the best AI for research covers its record. PerplexityBot fetches pages for search and honors robots.txt, guides report.
The catch: Perplexity-User skips robots.txt by design, according to Perplexity’s documentation as cited by developers, so blocking is only partial. Also, only a third-party guide reports a Semrush integration, not Perplexity itself.
5. Microsoft Copilot
Copilot works inside Word for drafting. But the sources behind our reviews show no SEO data connector, crawler documentation or coding agent for SEO work. Details are in our Microsoft Copilot review.
Which Tool for Which SEO Job
The best AI for SEO on this list depends on the job. Keyword and backlink data in chat: ChatGPT or Claude, with a Semrush plan. Technical fixes: Claude Code or Codex, or the free Antigravity CLI. Cited competitor research: Perplexity. For the two leaders side by side, see our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison.
Dedicated content optimizers, by contrast, grade drafts against top-ranking pages. Our reviews of Surfer SEO, Clearscope and Frase cover them.
Our list of Surfer SEO alternatives, moreover, compares optimizers with general assistants.
In addition, each SEO task has its own guide: keyword research, meta descriptions and headlines.
For site structure, also see our guides to internal linking, topic clusters and content calendars.
Stay Within Google’s Rules
Google’s Search Central guidance says generative AI can help with research and structure. But generating many pages without added value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. So use AI for analysis and fixes, and keep a person responsible for what gets published. For more, our page on using AI for SEO content covers what Google’s guidance says about AI-written pages.
Take keyword volumes from Semrush or Ahrefs data rather than a model’s memory. Also decide your crawler rules on purpose. Block training bots if you want, but allow the search bots if you want AI answers to cite you.

How We Research
This list draws on Semrush’s announcements and on OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s crawler documentation. It also draws on Google’s guidance, read on October 1 and 2, 2026. Google-Extended and Perplexity crawler details come from SEO guides, and we name them as such.
We run no ranking experiments of our own. Our criteria live on our about page.
