Claude for SEO covers two jobs. One is using Claude to research, analyze and fix a site, now with live Semrush data through an official connector. The other is deciding whether Anthropic’s crawlers can read your site, which affects both model training and how often Claude cites you.
Google’s rules apply either way: AI helps with research and structure, but mass pages without added value can break its spam policies. This guide covers what Claude does for SEO work, how Anthropic’s three crawlers differ, and what to check.
Claude for SEO: The Short Answer
Claude for SEO works best on Pro as an analyst with real data connected. Pro, at $20 a month or $200 a year, adds Research with citations, the Semrush connector and Claude Code for technical fixes. Free offers web search with citations but not Research or Claude Code.
For visibility in Claude, watch two crawlers, not one. Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User may reduce how visible your site is in Claude’s search answers. Blocking ClaudeBot, the training crawler, keeps your future pages out of training without that effect.
What Claude Can Do for SEO Work
Research. Research runs several web searches and returns cited answers on paid plans, and it can read connected Google Docs and Gmail. Our guide to Claude for research covers how to check what it finds.
Live SEO data. Semrush launched an official connector for Claude on August 26, 2026, for subscribers to Semrush One and SEO Classic. Ahrefs also lists a Claude connector, a guide from Carly reports. In both cases, keyword and backlink numbers come from the SEO tool, not from Claude.
Technical fixes. Claude Code, on Pro and Max, can edit templates, structured data and site code from your terminal or IDE. It starts with read-only access, and its shell sandbox has to be switched on, as our guide to Claude for coding explains.
| Plan | Price (US) | What it adds for SEO work |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Web search with citations; up to 5 projects |
| Pro | $20/mo or $200/yr | Research; Semrush connector; Claude Code |
| Max, lower tier | $100/mo | Higher limits for heavy audits |
| Team Standard | $25/seat/mo, or $20 yearly | No training on client data by default |

Anthropic’s Crawlers and Your Site
Anthropic runs three crawlers with different jobs. Its crawler help article says ClaudeBot collects content for training, and blocking it excludes your site’s future materials from training data. Claude-User fetches pages when a person asks Claude about them. Our page on using AI for SEO content covers what Google’s guidance says about AI-written pages.
Claude-SearchBot indexes the web to improve search results. Anthropic says blocking it, or Claude-User, may reduce your site’s visibility in Claude’s search answers. All three honor robots.txt, including the Crawl-delay extension, and Anthropic publishes the IP addresses its crawlers use.
So a site can block ClaudeBot to stay out of training and still allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Each bot needs its own line in robots.txt, and blocking one does not block the others.

What Google Says About AI Content
Google’s Search Central guidance says generative AI can be particularly useful for researching a topic and adding structure to original content. It also warns that generating many pages without adding value may violate its policy on scaled content abuse. Human review and pages with something only you can add keep AI-assisted work on the right side of that line.
Check Every Number
No major news-accuracy study has tested Claude, so its sourcing record is unknown rather than proven. Opus 5.5 scores 46 on Artificial Analysis’s knowledge index, slightly ahead of GPT-6 Astra. Even so, no model should supply statistics for a page on its own.
Take keyword volumes from Semrush or Ahrefs data, open every cited source, and keep a record of where each claim came from.
Your Data and Client Data
On Free, Pro and Max, Claude trains on chats by default until you turn off Help improve Claude. With training on, Anthropic keeps chats for five years. That includes uploaded exports and client details. Team and Enterprise plans skip training by default, which matters for agencies.
Where Claude Runs Short for SEO
Claude does not replace an SEO tool, and its connectors need their own subscriptions. Research and Claude Code are paid-only, and Anthropic publishes no message counts, so heavy audit weeks can hit the shared session limit. And publishing many near-identical pages with any AI risks Google’s scaled content policy.
Who Should Use Claude for SEO, and What to Use Instead
Claude suits SEOs who want research, Semrush data and code fixes in one subscription. It fits agencies on Team plans and site owners comfortable working in a terminal. Our guide to using AI for keyword research also sets out six steps.
ChatGPT offers a similar setup. It has its own Semrush app and its own crawler rules, as our guide to ChatGPT for SEO covers. Our list of the best AI for blogging compares both for content work, and our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison compares the subscriptions.
