Gemini vs DeepSeek is a contest between two free starting points. Gemini’s free plan includes Deep Research, Gemini Notebook and image generation, and it also works with Google’s apps. DeepSeek’s app is free too, and its newest model is open-weight. However, its privacy policy says it stores personal data in China. Our page on Perplexity vs DeepSeek covers cited search against a free open-weight model that stores data in China.
Our reviews score Gemini 3.4 and DeepSeek 3.0. So the sections below compare price, scores, data and who each one suits.
Gemini vs DeepSeek: The Short Answer
Choose Gemini for everyday use, research and anything private; choose DeepSeek for cheap API work or self-hosting. Gemini also scores higher on Artificial Analysis’s knowledge index and on Arena’s text board. DeepSeek, however, has the cheaper API and downloadable weights.
Neither has a strong accuracy record. For example, the EBU and BBC found significant issues in 76% of Gemini’s news answers. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, meanwhile, declined only 4% of the questions it could not answer on Artificial Analysis’s test.
Head to Head

| API, cheapest rate | $0.75 per 1M input tokens (intro) | $0.15 per 1M input tokens, off-peak |
| Open weights | None in our sources | V4.1 Flash, downloadable |
| Where data is stored | Google, a US company | People’s Republic of China |
| AA Intelligence Index | 41 (Gemini 3.8 Flash) | 39 (V4.1 Flash) |

| Our score | 3.4 | 3.0 |

Price and Plans
Both cost nothing to start. Gemini’s free plan, however, does more: it includes Deep Research, Gemini Notebook with 50 sources per notebook, and image generation. After that, Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, and Google AI Pro $19.99 with 5 TB and a 1M-token context.
DeepSeek has no paid consumer plan, so paid use goes through its API. As a result, V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output off-peak. In contrast, Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 and $3.75 through December 31, 2026. Our list of the best AI tools for developers compares both APIs.
What the Independent Boards Show
Gemini leads on most boards, sometimes narrowly. Artificial Analysis gives Gemini 3.8 Flash 41 on its Intelligence Index and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 39. On the knowledge index, however, the gap is wider: 30 against minus 5.3.
Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026 had gemini-3.8-flash-high 11th, marked preliminary, and deepseek-v4.1-flash-max 40th. For coding agents, though, the two sit close together on BenchLM’s mirror of Artificial Analysis’s index. DeepSeek V4 Pro in Codex scored 43.1, while Gemini 3.8 Flash in Antigravity scored 41.9, as our list of the best AI for coding covers.
⚠️ Only Gemini has a news-accuracy result. The EBU and BBC found significant issues in 76% of its news answers. But that study did not include DeepSeek, so it offers no head-to-head comparison.
Where Your Data Goes
DeepSeek stores your data in China. Its privacy policy says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China. It also keeps chat data as long as the account exists. In addition, it allows sharing with authorities to comply with legal requests.
Gemini, however, has its own trade-off. With Keep Activity on, Google may train on your chats and send some to human reviewers. Those reviewers can keep them for up to three years. Turning it off, then, disconnects Gmail and Drive in Gemini.
⚠️ Several governments restrict DeepSeek. For example, Italy blocked the app in January 2025, and Australia banned it from government devices. The Czech Republic also barred its public administration, Reuters reported. So check your employer’s policy before using it for work.

Research and Google Apps
Gemini’s Deep Research writes cited reports, exports them to Google Docs, and can add your Gmail or Drive as sources. Our guide to Gemini for research covers how to check those reports.
DeepSeek’s app runs V4 Pro in Expert Mode, its API news page says. However, the sources behind our reviews document no comparable research mode or app integrations for it. For Gemini against Claude, see our Claude vs Gemini comparison.
Where Each One Is Weakest
Gemini is weakest on accuracy and the privacy trade-off. Its news-accuracy result is the worst of the assistants the EBU and BBC tested. Also, keeping Gmail and Drive in Gemini means leaving training on.
DeepSeek is weakest on data and admitting unknowns. Your chats are stored in China, and several governments restrict the app. Its model also rarely declines a question it cannot answer.
Winners by Category
Free plan features: Gemini, because it adds Deep Research and Notebook. Cheapest API and open weights: DeepSeek, since V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak and is downloadable. Intelligence and knowledge indexes: Gemini, narrowly on the first and widely on the second. Arena text board: Gemini, 11th against 40th. Coding agents: a near tie, although DeepSeek is slightly ahead. Data, workplace use and Google apps: Gemini, while DeepSeek stores data in China.
When to Choose DeepSeek Instead
Take DeepSeek for cheap API work, for self-hosting its open weights, or for free, low-stakes chat. Still, keep personal, client and work data out of the app.
Take Gemini for everyday use, research and Google’s apps, but check every citation. For DeepSeek against other rivals, see our ChatGPT vs DeepSeek comparison and our Claude vs DeepSeek comparison. Similarly, our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison covers Gemini’s main rival.

How We Research
This comparison reuses the sources behind our Gemini review and our DeepSeek review, rechecked on October 2, 2026. Rankings come from Arena and Artificial Analysis, and coding scores from BenchLM’s mirror of its index, each dated where used.
Both scores come from the same five criteria, applied to each tool in its own review. We run no tests of our own. The criteria behind every score live on our about page. Our list of the cheapest useful AI tools also covers other free options.
