NotebookLM, now Google’s Gemini Notebook, scores 3.6 in our NotebookLM review. It answers from your own sources with linked citations, for free. However, its limits became compute quotas in September 2026, and it does not replace a full assistant.

How We Ordered These NotebookLM Alternatives
This list follows our review scores, highest first. Ties go to the lower paid entry price, as in our list of Notion AI alternatives.
So ChatGPT, at $8, sits above Claude, and Consensus, at $12 billed yearly, above Notion AI at $20. Mem, at $9, therefore sits above Elicit’s $11 academic plan. Our ChatGPT vs NotebookLM comparison also weighs price and data terms.
Why People Leave Gemini Notebook
First, since September 2, 2026, its limits work as compute quotas that refresh every five hours, up to a weekly ceiling. Second, it answers only from sources you add, so it cannot search the web or write broadly.
On the other hand, leaving has a cost. It is free, cites every answer to your sources, and does not train on your sources unless you send feedback, as our guide to which AI tools train on your data notes.

1. ChatGPT: Breadth and Deep Research
ChatGPT Go, for example, costs $8 in the US and Plus $20. It reads uploaded files, runs deep research across the web, and also creates images and code.
What you give up, though: its answers mix your files with web sources, and personal plans train by default. Our guide to ChatGPT for research covers the setup.
2. Claude: Long Documents in Projects
Claude Pro, meanwhile, costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Projects keep files and instructions across chats. Its Opus 5.5, moreover, led Arena’s creative-writing board in September 2026.
What you give up, however: personal plans train unless you opt out. Our guide to using Claude for long documents covers file limits, and our Claude review covers the plans.
3. Perplexity: Cited Web Answers
Perplexity, for its part, cites every answer and had the best record in the EBU and BBC news study. Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year.
What you give up, though: it searches the web rather than staying within your sources. Our Perplexity vs NotebookLM comparison covers both.
4. Consensus: Answers From Studies
Consensus, by contrast, answers questions from more than 200 million peer-reviewed papers, with a meter of how many agree. Pro costs $12 a month billed yearly, and the free plan includes unlimited search.
What you give up, however: it does not read your own notes, and its training rules are unconfirmed outside Enterprise. Our Consensus review covers the plans.
5. Notion AI: Team Workspace Answers
Notion AI, however, answers from your whole team workspace and does not train on your data by default. Full AI, however, needs Business at $20 per member billed yearly.
What you give up, though: it works best if your knowledge already lives in Notion. Our Notion AI review covers the details.
6. Mem: Notes With an Agent
Mem Plus costs $9 a month, and its agent tracks tasks and projects from your notes. Its policy, moreover, rules out training general models on your notes.
What you give up, however: every plan caps usage. Our Mem review explains the limits.
7. Elicit: Screening Research Papers
Finally, Elicit searches 138 million papers, extracts data into tables and, on Pro, screens up to 5,000 papers for a systematic review. Academic Plus costs $11 a month billed yearly.
What you give up, though: only Enterprise promises no training. Our Elicit review covers the workflow.
Which Alternative for Which Reason
If you need breadth and web research, take ChatGPT. Long documents and writing, by contrast, point to Claude.
Research papers call for Consensus or Elicit, and a team wiki for Notion AI. If free source-grounded answers are all you need, however, staying with Gemini Notebook may be simplest.
