Perplexity vs NotebookLM is a choice between searching the web and studying your own documents. Perplexity answers questions from the open web with a citation on every answer. NotebookLM, which Google renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026, answers only from the sources you add.
Both also have free plans, and both cost about $20 a month at the standard tier. Our reviews score Perplexity 3.4 and NotebookLM 3.6.
Perplexity vs NotebookLM: The Short Answer
Choose Perplexity when you need to find information you do not have yet. It searches the web, cites each answer, and, moreover, had the lowest share of significant issues among the assistants in the EBU and BBC news study, at 30%.
Choose NotebookLM, by contrast, when you already have the material: course readings, reports or papers. It answers from them with links to the passages, and it turns them into audio summaries, quizzes and mind maps. In practice, many students and researchers will reasonably use both. Our Claude vs NotebookLM comparison also weighs price and data terms.

Prices and Free Plans
First, Perplexity Free offers practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month. Pro then costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Education Pro costs $10 for verified students, as our guide to Perplexity for students covers.
Gemini Notebook, on the other hand, is free with 100 notebooks, 50 sources each and 10 Deep Research runs a month. Its higher limits come with Google’s AI plans, from $4.99 a month. Since September 2, moreover, its usage quota refreshes every five hours up to a weekly limit.
Sources and Accuracy
On accuracy, Perplexity has the stronger tested record. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of its news answers had significant issues, the lowest of four assistants, and the Tow Center found the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools in March 2025.
NotebookLM, by contrast, has no independent test of its own answers. Its design, however, limits the problem instead, since it answers only from your documents and links each claim to a passage. Either way, open the citations before you rely on an answer, as our guide to fact-checking AI output explains.
What Each One Makes
Perplexity returns cited answers and longer Research reports, as our guide to Perplexity for summarization also shows. Its Computer agent, meanwhile, runs multi-step tasks on credits, and our guide to Perplexity for research covers its Research mode.
Gemini Notebook, for its part, turns your sources into Audio and Video Overviews, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, reports and slide decks. That makes it stronger for studying, while Perplexity is stronger for finding.
Using Them Together
The two fit together well, though. First, use Perplexity to find and read sources on a topic. Then add the best of them, such as web pages or PDFs, to a Gemini Notebook and study them there with quizzes and audio summaries.
This split also keeps each tool on its strength: Perplexity for the open web, Notebook for a fixed set of documents. Our guide to combining AI tools covers when a second tool is worth it.

Your Data
Perplexity, for one, trains on Free, Pro and Max data by default, and its opt-out covers only data from then on. Gemini Notebook, however, does not use your data for training unless you send feedback, which Google may review in full.
So on Gemini Notebook, avoid rating answers in notebooks with private material. On Perplexity, turn off AI data retention before you start. Workspace and Enterprise accounts on both, finally, are excluded from training.
Who Owns Each
Perplexity AI is an independent company. Gemini Notebook, by contrast, belongs to Google and comes with Google’s AI plans, as our Gemini review covers.
Winners by Category
Perplexity wins on finding new information, the tested sourcing record and yearly billing. It is also cheaper for students on Education Pro.
NotebookLM, on the other hand, wins on studying your own material, the free plan’s generosity and default data terms. Overall, in Perplexity vs NotebookLM our scores favor NotebookLM narrowly, 3.6 against 3.4, but they solve different problems. Our list of NotebookLM alternatives also ranks seven options and what each gives up.
Which One to Choose
Take Perplexity for quick research on the open web, news questions and anything where you need new sources. By contrast, take Gemini Notebook for course readings, literature you already collected and learning by listening.
For students, our list of the best AI for students compares both with other assistants, and our guide to Gemini for students covers Google’s student offer. Both tools also suit graduate work. Researchers, meanwhile, can see our list of the best AI tools for researchers, which weighs context windows too.
