Claude vs NotebookLM compares a general assistant with a tool that answers only from the sources you give it. Claude, for example, writes, searches the web and works across many tasks. NotebookLM, renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026, sticks to your documents and cites the passages it used.
Our reviews score Claude and NotebookLM 3.6 each. So the choice depends on whether you need breadth or answers grounded in your own material.

Grounded Answers vs General Answers
NotebookLM answers only from the documents you add and links each claim to a passage, so you can check it quickly. It does not, however, search for new material on its own.
Claude, by contrast, mixes your files with its training and, when you ask, the web. That makes it broader but also means you must check which claims came from your files. Our guide to using Claude for long documents covers working with files, and our guide to fact-checking AI output covers the routine.
Limits and Prices
For example, NotebookLM’s free plan allows 100 notebooks, 50 sources each and 50 chats a day. Google AI Plus raises that to 100 sources, and Google AI Pro to 300, as our Gemini pricing guide lists.
Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year. Our comparison of AI plans and prices covers every tier.
Writing and Output
Claude drafts essays, reports and emails from your notes, and edits them in a long-form workspace. Our guide to Claude for writing covers it.
NotebookLM, meanwhile, also produces study guides, briefings and Audio Overviews from your sources, but it is not built for long drafting.

Data and Privacy
On data, NotebookLM does not train on your sources unless you send feedback. Claude’s personal plans, by contrast, train on chats by default, with an opt-out.
Therefore, for confidential documents, NotebookLM’s default is safer. Our guide to which AI tools train on your data compares each rule.
Who Owns Each
Anthropic, a public benefit corporation, makes Claude, and Google holds a stake in it. Google, part of Alphabet, makes Gemini Notebook. Our guide to who owns which AI tool covers both.
