Of the tools on this list, the best ChatGPT alternatives are Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, in that order on our scores. Microsoft Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek follow. Which one fits depends on why you are leaving ChatGPT. Each entry below names what it does better and what you give up.
ChatGPT itself scores 3.6 in our review, level with Claude. Switching makes sense when one of ChatGPT’s specific weak spots matters to you. Those include ads on its low tiers, monthly-only Plus, weaker sourcing or a plan that does not fit your apps. If Plus stops paying off, our guide on how to cancel ChatGPT Plus explains the steps and refunds.
Best ChatGPT Alternatives: The Short Answer
Among the best ChatGPT alternatives on this list, Claude is the closest match. It costs the same $20 a month, adds a $200 yearly option and shows no ads. Its Opus 5.5 also led Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, 2026. You give up ChatGPT’s cheaper Go tier and its higher scores on ARC-AGI reasoning puzzles. Our ChatGPT vs Poe comparison also weighs OpenAI’s full app against many models paid in points.
For a specific reason, pick a specialist. Perplexity cites every answer, Gemini starts at $4.99 with storage, and Copilot comes with Office for $9.99. Grok invents fewer answers on Artificial Analysis’s test. DeepSeek is free, but it stores your data in China.

How We Ordered These ChatGPT Alternatives
This list of the best ChatGPT alternatives follows our review scores, highest first. Ties follow the rule from our list of the best AI tools: the lower paid entry price goes first. That puts Gemini above Perplexity and Copilot above Grok. The order is a starting point, and the reason-by-reason section below matters as much. Our ChatGPT vs Elicit comparison also weighs price and data terms.
1. Claude: The Closest Match, With No Ads
Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Anthropic has pledged to keep Claude ad-free. Opus 5.5 led Arena’s creative-writing board on September 25. Claude Code scored 68 on Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index, against 63 for Codex. Research on paid plans returns cited answers. Our ChatGPT vs Sudowrite comparison also covers price and training terms.
What you give up: ChatGPT’s $8 Go tier and its higher ARC-AGI scores. Claude’s limits come without published numbers, and chats stay five years if training is on. Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers the details.
2. Gemini: Cheapest Paid Entry, With Storage
Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 with 5 TB and a 1M-token context window. On Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026, gemini-3.8-flash-high placed 11th, against 20th for OpenAI’s best entry.
What you give up: Artificial Analysis gives Gemini 3.8 Flash 41 against 53 for GPT-6 Astra. An EBU and BBC study also found significant issues in 76% of Gemini’s news answers, against 36% of ChatGPT’s. Turning off training also disconnects Gmail and Drive. Our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison covers the details.
3. Perplexity: Better Sourcing, No Ads
Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, cites every answer and has shown no ads since February 2026. In two news studies, it made fewer errors than ChatGPT. The EBU and BBC found 30% against 36%, and the Tow Center 37% against 67%.
What you give up: OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s flagship models are on Perplexity Max only. There is no coding agent like Codex, and Perplexity’s Computer agent runs on credits that Pro does not grant monthly. Our ChatGPT vs Perplexity comparison covers the details.

4. Microsoft Copilot: ChatGPT-Class Models Inside Office
Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month and puts Copilot in Word, Excel and Outlook, with 1 TB of storage. Copilot runs models from OpenAI and Anthropic, and in the EBU and BBC study its error rate, 37%, roughly matched ChatGPT’s.
What you give up: the free app shows ads, and Deep Research left the consumer app on August 18, 2026. Its successor, Researcher, needs Microsoft 365 Premium. Training rules for the updated app are unclear. Details are in our Microsoft Copilot review.
5. Grok: Fewer Invented Answers
Artificial Analysis measured Grok 4.7 at a 29% hallucination rate, against 51% for GPT-6 Astra. GPT-5.6 Sol, the Plus chat model, sits at 92%, as reported by Tabbit. Grok also reads X in real time.
What you give up: SuperGrok is reported at $30 a month, and Bloomberg reported that its pricing may change. OpenAI’s models lead Grok on Arena and on the coding agent index. Grok’s January 2026 image scandal also led to blocks in two countries. Our ChatGPT vs Grok comparison covers the details.
6. DeepSeek: Free, With Data in China
The DeepSeek app is free, the API starts at $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak, and the V4.1 Flash weights are open. On Arena’s text board of September 30, deepseek-v4.1-flash-max placed 40th.
What you give up: DeepSeek stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China. On Artificial Analysis’s test, its model also almost never declined a question it could not answer. Details are in our DeepSeek review.
Which Alternative for Which Reason
The best ChatGPT alternatives on this list map to the reason you are leaving. Ads on Free or Go: Claude or Perplexity, which show none. Monthly-only billing: Claude or Perplexity, at $200 a year. Weak sourcing: Perplexity. Writing voice: Claude. Price: Gemini at $4.99, or DeepSeek for free if your chats hold nothing private. Office work: Microsoft Copilot. Invented answers: Grok, on Artificial Analysis’s measure.
Privacy is not a reason to switch by itself. Every consumer plan on this list can train on your chats by default, except where we could not confirm the rule. Business plans from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity skip training by default.

How We Research
This list draws on our individual reviews and our head-to-head comparisons, each read against the company’s own pricing, help and privacy pages. Rankings come from Arena and Artificial Analysis. Accuracy studies come from the EBU and BBC and the Tow Center, each dated where used.
We run no tests of our own. The criteria behind every score live on our about page.
