ChatGPT vs Perplexity is a choice between deeper tools and better sourcing. Both standard plans cost $20 a month. ChatGPT Plus adds deep research reports, Codex and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol, while Perplexity Pro offers a menu of models without the OpenAI and Anthropic flagships. Perplexity, in turn, cites every answer, shows no ads and made fewer errors in two independent news studies.
Our reviews score ChatGPT 3.6 and Perplexity 3.4. The sections below compare prices, models, accuracy, data and who each one suits.
ChatGPT vs Perplexity: The Short Answer
Choose Perplexity for quick, sourced answers; choose ChatGPT for long reports, writing and coding. In a Tow Center study of March 2025, Perplexity answered 37% of citation queries wrong, against 67% for ChatGPT Search. ChatGPT’s deep research and Codex cover more kinds of work.
On price, Perplexity is friendlier to annual payers and ad-averse users. Perplexity Pro costs $200 a year and has shown no ads since February 2026. ChatGPT Plus is monthly only, and its Free and Go plans show ads in OpenAI’s test regions.

Prices and Plans
Both standard plans cost $20 a month. Perplexity Pro also comes at $200 a year, while ChatGPT Plus is sold monthly only. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US and may include ads, and Perplexity’s Education Pro costs $10 for verified students and educators.
At the top, ChatGPT Pro comes at $100, $200 or $500 a month. Perplexity Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year. For teams, ChatGPT Business Standard costs $25 a seat monthly, and Perplexity Enterprise Pro $40.
Which Models You Get for $20
Neither side clearly wins on models at $20. OpenAI’s Help Center puts Plus chat on GPT-5.6 Sol at up to High effort, with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and ChatGPT Work. Perplexity’s Help Center lists GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3 and its own Sonar 2 on Pro. Our page on Claude vs Perplexity covers writing and coding against search with sources. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity comparison also weighs two assistants against a research engine.
GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 are on Perplexity Max only. On Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026, gpt-5.6-sol-xhigh placed 20th. Of the Pro models, kimi-k3-max placed 17th, gpt-5.6-terra-xhigh 50th and claude-sonnet-5-high 55th. Perplexity also notes that a model inside its product can behave differently from the same model in the provider’s own app. There, it runs with Perplexity’s search, prompts and limits.
What the Independent Evidence Shows
On sourcing, Perplexity leads. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of Perplexity’s news answers had a significant issue, against 36% of ChatGPT’s. Sourcing problems showed up in 15% of Perplexity’s answers and 24% of ChatGPT’s. The Tow Center study found a wider gap, at 37% wrong for Perplexity and 67% for ChatGPT Search.
On Arena’s Search board, OpenAI leads. The board of August 24, 2026 put gpt-5.6-sol-xhigh first at 1257. Perplexity’s two Sonar entries placed 29th and 31st of 34, but those were API models, and Perplexity retired them on September 27, 2026.
⚠️ Read the two kinds of evidence differently. The news studies tested the free consumer products, while the Arena board tested API models. Both studies predate the current models, so treat them as baselines rather than current scores.
Ads, Training and Data
Perplexity shows no ads; ChatGPT does on its low tiers. Perplexity phased out its sponsored answers in February 2026 and told the Financial Times it had no plans to bring them back, Search Engine Land reported. OpenAI tests ads on Free and Go and keeps Plus and higher plans ad-free.
Both train on personal chats by default. ChatGPT’s opt-out sits in Data controls, though rating a response can still send the whole chat for training. Perplexity’s opt-out is the AI data retention toggle, and it covers only data collected after you switch it off.

Limits You Will Hit
Neither company publishes message counts for its standard plan. ChatGPT Plus has a thinking limit with no published number, and deep research is listed as expanded rather than counted. Perplexity Pro lists weekly limits for average use, and Free gets three Pro Searches a day.
Agents work differently. Codex comes with every ChatGPT plan and shares its allowance with ChatGPT Work, as our guide to ChatGPT for coding explains. Perplexity’s Computer agent runs on credits, and Pro includes no monthly credits, only a one-time bonus of 4,000.
Where Each One Is Weakest
ChatGPT is weakest on sourcing and ads. It made more errors than Perplexity in both news studies, Free and Go show ads, and Plus has no annual option.
Perplexity is weakest on models and depth. Its $20 plan lacks the flagship models from OpenAI and Anthropic, Pro limits carry no published number, and agent tasks cost extra credits on Pro.
Winners by Category
Citations and sourcing: Perplexity, ahead in both news studies. Models on the $20 plan: a split, since Perplexity Pro lacks the OpenAI and Anthropic flagships but includes Kimi K3. Search board: ChatGPT, first on Arena’s Search board, though Perplexity’s entries were API models. Long reports: ChatGPT, with deep research exports to Word and PDF. Coding: ChatGPT, with Codex on every plan. Ads: Perplexity, with none on any plan. Annual billing: Perplexity, at $200 a year. Cheapest paid tier: ChatGPT, with Go at $8. Privacy defaults: a tie, since both train on personal chats until you opt out.

How We Research
This comparison reuses the sources behind our ChatGPT review and our Perplexity review, rechecked on October 1, 2026. Perplexity’s model list comes from its Help Center article on models by plan. Accuracy figures come from the EBU and BBC and the Tow Center, and rankings from Arena, each dated where used.
Both scores come from the same five criteria, applied to each tool in its own review. We run no tests of our own. The criteria behind every score live on our about page.
