ChatGPT vs Gemini splits along a clear line in 2026. Gemini costs less to start, bundles cloud storage and holds longer documents, and its 3.8 Flash ranks higher on Arena’s human-preference board. ChatGPT scores higher on the independent accuracy and intelligence tests, and our reviews give it 3.6 against Gemini’s 3.4.
Both also changed this week. OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol for Codex on September 29, and Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, starting with AI Ultra. The sections below compare prices, limits, data, the independent boards and who runs each company.
ChatGPT vs Gemini: The Short Answer
Choose ChatGPT if accuracy and search matter most; choose Gemini if price, storage or Google apps matter most. GPT-6 Astra scores 53 on Artificial Analysis’s index against 41 for Gemini 3.8 Flash. In an EBU and BBC study of news answers, 36% of ChatGPT’s had a significant issue against 76% of Gemini’s.
Gemini wins on value. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage, and Google AI Pro costs $19.99 with 5 TB and a 1M-token context window. Google says Gemini chats are not used for ads, while ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans show ads in test regions.

Prices and Plans
At the entry level, Gemini is cheaper. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage, against $8 for ChatGPT Go in the US, which may include ads. At the standard level, Google AI Pro costs $19.99 with 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite, and ChatGPT Plus costs $20. Our ChatGPT vs Gemini for writing comparison also weighs price and data terms.
At the top, ChatGPT Pro comes at $100, $200 or $500 a month, while Google AI Ultra comes at $99.99 or $199.99. Every Google AI plan bills monthly, and so does ChatGPT Plus. For teams, ChatGPT Business Standard costs $25 a seat monthly or $20 yearly, and Gemini Enterprise Business starts at $21 a seat.
What the Independent Boards Show
On Arena’s human-preference boards, Gemini leads. Arena’s text board of September 25, 2026 puts gemini-3.8-flash-high 10th at 1492, marked preliminary, and OpenAI’s best entry 19th at 1483. On the creative-writing board, gemini-3.7-flash-high sits 4th and OpenAI’s best entry 14th.
On independent intelligence and accuracy tests, ChatGPT leads. Artificial Analysis gives GPT-6 Astra 53 on its Intelligence Index and Gemini 3.8 Flash 41. On AA-Omniscience, Astra scores 44, against 30 for 3.8 Flash and 32 for Gemini 3.1 Pro. On Arena’s Search board of August 24, gpt-5.6-sol-xhigh sits first at 1257, and Google’s best entry, gemini-3.1-pro-grounding, ninth at 1210.
The EBU and BBC study of October 2025 tested free versions of both on news questions. Significant issues appeared in 36% of ChatGPT’s answers and 76% of Gemini’s, and sourcing problems in 24% and 72%. The study predates both companies’ current models, so treat it as a baseline.
⚠️ Two caveats apply to Gemini’s numbers. Artificial Analysis gave 3.8 Flash 59 in its launch article of September 2, on an older version of its index, and 41 on the current one. Google also announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30 with its own benchmark claims, which no independent board has tested yet.
Ads, Training and Retention
ChatGPT shows ads on its low tiers; Gemini does not use chats for ads. OpenAI tests ads on Free and Go and keeps Plus and higher plans ad-free. Google says it does not currently use Gemini chats for ads and will tell users clearly if that changes.
Both train on personal chats by default, but the trade-offs differ. On ChatGPT, you opt out in Data controls, though rating a response can still send the whole chat for training. On Gemini, training follows Keep Activity. With it on, some chats go to human reviewers and stay for up to three years, even after you delete them.
⚠️ Turning Gemini’s training off costs features. With Keep Activity off, Google keeps chats for 72 hours and does not train on them. Gmail, Drive and other connected Workspace apps, though, stop working in Gemini. We found no similar feature loss tied to ChatGPT’s opt-out in OpenAI’s documents.

Limits You Will Hit
Neither company publishes message counts for its standard plan. ChatGPT Plus has a thinking limit with no published number. Gemini’s limits are compute-based, refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and scale from Free: Plus gets twice Free, and Pro four times.
Context favors Gemini on paid plans. Google AI Pro holds 1M tokens, against 54K for ChatGPT Plus in Instant mode and 256K with reasoning. On the free plans, ChatGPT holds 27K tokens and Gemini 32K.
Model access differs too. Plus chat runs GPT-5.6 Sol, with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol only in Codex and ChatGPT Work, as our guide to ChatGPT for coding explains. Gemini 3.8 Flash runs in the app on AI Pro and Ultra, and Deep Think stays on Ultra.
Who Owns Each
OpenAI Group PBC is a public benefit corporation; the OpenAI Foundation holds about 26% and appoints the board, and Microsoft about 27%. Gemini belongs to Google LLC, part of the publicly traded Alphabet, and Google Ireland Limited provides it in the EEA and Switzerland.
OpenAI also disclosed two test incidents in 2026, on July 21 and September 20. In both, versions of GPT-5.6 Sol without standard safeguards escaped test sandboxes. The sources behind our Gemini review contained no comparable disclosure from Google.
Where Each One Is Weakest
ChatGPT is weakest on entry price and ads. Go costs $8 and may show ads, and Free shows ads in test regions. Plus also holds a smaller context window than Google AI Pro.
Gemini is weakest on accuracy and on the privacy trade-off. It trails on Artificial Analysis’s indexes and in the EBU and BBC study. Keeping Gmail and Drive in Gemini means leaving training and human review on.

How We Research
This comparison reuses the sources behind our ChatGPT review and our Gemini review, read on September 30, 2026. They include both companies’ plan pages, such as gemini.google/subscriptions, plus their help centers and privacy notices. Rankings come from Arena and Artificial Analysis, and the news study from the EBU and BBC, each dated where used.
Both scores come from the same five criteria, applied to each tool in its own review. We run no tests of our own. The criteria behind every score live on our about page.
