The real cost of ownership for AI tools is the yearly bill plus credits, add-on apps and price changes, not the monthly sticker price. At the standard tier, most of the tools on this list cost $20 a month. The yearly totals, though, range from $199.99 to a reported $360. Our page on combining AI tools covers when a second assistant earns its cost.

Every figure below comes from each company’s pricing pages, read on September 30 and October 1, 2026. Where a plan has no yearly option, we multiply the monthly price by 12 and say so.

AI Tools’ Real Cost of Ownership: The Short Answer

Paying yearly saves money only where a yearly plan exists. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro cost $200 a year against $240 monthly. Microsoft 365 Premium costs $199.99 a year against $239.88. ChatGPT Plus and every Google AI plan bill monthly only, so a year costs $240 and $239.88.

The extras matter more at the top. Claude’s Fable models, Perplexity’s Computer agent and heavy Codex use can all add credit charges on top of a plan. SEO apps such as Semrush and Ahrefs need their own subscriptions.

How the Real Cost of Ownership of AI Tools Adds Up

Extras are where the real cost of ownership of AI tools moves furthest from the sticker price. Credits. On Claude Pro, Fable models run on usage credits, and on Max they take up to half the weekly limit before credits apply. Perplexity Pro includes no monthly credits for its Computer agent, only a one-time 4,000. Max includes 10,000 a month, with a default extra-spending cap of $200 that can rise to $5,000.

ChatGPT Plus users can buy credits for Codex beyond the plan allowance, including for heavier GPT-6 Astra use, as our guide to ChatGPT for coding explains. Google offers AI credits once a paid Gemini plan hits its limit. Microsoft has said consumer plans will add usage-based billing for Cowork and Code later this year, GeekWire reported.

Add-on apps. Semrush and Ahrefs connect to ChatGPT and Claude, but each needs its own subscription, as our guide to ChatGPT for SEO covers. Budget for them separately if your work depends on their data.

Prices and Allowances That Changed in 2026

Plans move often, so a price read today may not last the year. Google AI Plus fell to $4.99 from $7.99 around June 2026. Google AI Ultra at its top tier now costs $199.99, against $249.99 at its 2025 launch. OpenAI reopened Pro 200 on September 29, 2026 with a smaller allowance for new subscribers.

Bloomberg reported on September 30, 2026 that SpaceXAI is weighing a single Grok and X subscription. It would have four tiers, up to a $100 Ultra tier. Check each plan page on the day you buy.

What Free Plans Cost You

The real cost of ownership of AI tools on free plans is paid in ads and data rather than money. ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans show ads in OpenAI’s test regions. Microsoft’s Copilot app shows ads without a Microsoft 365 subscription. Most consumer plans, free or paid, also train on your chats by default until you opt out. Perplexity shows no ads on any plan, as our ChatGPT vs Perplexity comparison notes. Our guide to AI free trials worth using also sorts trials by risk of surprise charges.

Team Plans

For teams, ChatGPT Business Standard and Claude Team Standard each cost $25 a seat monthly, or $20 on yearly billing. Gemini Enterprise Business starts at $21 a seat a month. Perplexity Enterprise Pro costs $40 a seat monthly or $400 a year. Business plans from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity skip training on your data by default.

Refunds and Canceling

Refund terms change the cost of a wrong choice. OpenAI may refund within 7 days if a plan is unused. It also offers prorated refunds within 14 days in the EU, UK and Turkey. Anthropic’s subscriptions are generally non-refundable outside local law, and Google gives no refunds for partial billing periods except where law requires. We found no refund policy in SpaceXAI’s consumer FAQ. Our page on the cheapest useful AI tools covers the lowest documented price for each job.

How We Research

This page collects prices from each company’s own pricing pages, such as chatgpt.com/pricing, claude.com/pricing and gemini.google/subscriptions, read on September 30 and October 1, 2026. Yearly figures for monthly-only plans are our arithmetic, marked as computed. Grok’s prices come from third-party readings, because its plan pages do not render fully for automated reading.

We do not take payment from any company for placement. Our scoring criteria for each tool live on our about page, and our list of the best AI tools ranks them.
