Of the tools on this list, the best AI for writing right now is Claude, followed by Gemini and ChatGPT. We order them by how the model in each tool’s standard paid plan places on Arena’s creative-writing board. There, people vote blind on stories, poems and jokes. For more, our page on writing with AI without sounding like AI covers the word patterns readers notice and why detectors misfire.

That order may not last. Google’s Gemini 4 Argon posted the top creative-writing score on Arena’s board of September 30, 2026. It reaches AI Ultra subscribers first, though, and is not yet in the plans compared here. The sections below explain the order, then give each tool’s writing evidence, price and catch.

Best AI for Writing: The Short Answer

Among the tools on this list, the best AI for writing fiction and voice-heavy work is Claude. Its Opus 5.5 placed first on Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, 2026, though on only 487 votes. Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year and shows no ads.

For everyday documents, the gap narrows. Gemini’s Google AI Pro holds 1M tokens of context for $19.99, ChatGPT Plus adds a full-screen writing editor for $20, and Copilot works inside Word. For writing from sources, Perplexity cites every answer.

How We Ordered the Best AI for Writing

This list of the best AI for writing follows one rule. We place each tool by the best Arena creative-writing result of the model family its standard paid plan runs. Tools without their own model on that board follow by our review score. Arena ranks by blind human votes on creative prompts, so it measures preference, not grammar or facts. Our guide to avoiding overuse of AI in writing also offers a quick self-check.

Two cautions apply. Claude’s first place rests on 487 votes, and Arena’s board of September 30 put Google’s unreleased Gemini 4 Argon above every other model, at 1522. When Argon reaches Google AI Pro, Gemini may move to the top.

The list covers general AI assistants. Dedicated writing apps such as Grammarly, Jasper and Sudowrite work differently and are not ranked here; our Jasper review and list of Jasper alternatives cover the marketing side. We left Grok and DeepSeek off. The sources behind our reviews document no drafting editor, document integration or citation feature for them, and DeepSeek stores drafts in China.

1. Claude: Leads the Creative-Writing Board

Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Anthropic has pledged to keep Claude ad-free. Opus 5.5, available on paid plans, placed first on Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, and Claude Fable 5 placed second. Fable models cost extra on Pro, through usage credits.

The catch: usage runs on five-hour sessions and weekly caps without published numbers. Chats train Anthropic’s models and stay for five years unless you switch training off. Details are in our Claude review.

2. Gemini: Long Context for Google Users

Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month, holds 1M tokens of context and includes 5 TB of storage. Google’s best entry on the creative-writing board of September 25, gemini-3.7-flash-high, placed fourth, and AI Pro now runs 3.8 Flash in the app.

The catch: using Gemini with Gmail and Drive requires Keep Activity. That means training and possible human review of some chats, kept up to three years. Gemini 4 Argon, announced on September 30, reaches AI Ultra first. Details are in our Gemini review.

3. ChatGPT: A Full-Screen Editor, Mid-Table Prose

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and opens longer drafts in a full-screen writing editor, which replaced canvas in May. OpenAI’s best creative-writing entry, gpt-5.6-sol-xhigh, placed 14th on September 25, at an effort setting the Plus chat does not offer.

The catch: Free and Go write with the GPT-5.6 Luna family and show ads in test regions. Drafts also train OpenAI’s models until you opt out. Our guide to ChatGPT for writing covers the details.

4. Perplexity: Writing From Sources

Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and every answer carries citations. In a Tow Center study of March 2025, it had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools, at 37%. Pro subscribers can switch to models from OpenAI and Anthropic for drafting.

The catch: it targets research rather than long drafts, and Pro limits carry no published number. Searches also train its models by default. Details are in our Perplexity review.

5. Microsoft Copilot: Writing Inside Word

Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month and puts Copilot inside Word and Outlook, with 1 TB of storage. In September, Microsoft’s Copilot blog announced Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol for Word, WindowsForum reported.

The catch: the free app shows ads, Microsoft publishes no usage limits, and the updated app’s training rules are unclear. Details are in our Microsoft Copilot review.

Which Tool for Which Writing Job

The best AI for writing on this list depends on the job. Fiction and voice: Claude, first on the creative-writing board. Long documents: Gemini, with 1M tokens on AI Pro. Everyday drafting in one app: ChatGPT, with its full-screen editor. Writing from sources: Perplexity. Writing in Word: Microsoft Copilot. Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers the two most common choices side by side. Our Claude vs Gemini for writing comparison covers which fits which job.

What to Check Before You Paste a Draft

Every consumer plan on this list can use your drafts for training by default, so switch training off first. Business plans from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity skip training by default.

Ownership is a separate question. In January 2025, the US Copyright Office said prompts alone do not make you the author of AI output. Your own edits and arrangement, though, can be protected. For the wider field beyond writing, see our list of the best AI tools.

How We Research

This list draws on our individual reviews, each read against the company’s own pricing, help and privacy pages on September 30, 2026. Creative-writing places come from Arena’s board of September 25, 2026, and the Argon result from its board of September 30.

We run no writing tests of our own and show no sample outputs, since those would age with every model update. The criteria live on our about page.
