ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity sets two general assistants against a research engine. All three standard plans cost $20 a month. However, Perplexity cites a source on every answer by default. ChatGPT and Claude, by contrast, do much more besides search.
Our reviews score ChatGPT 3.6, Claude 3.6 and Perplexity 3.4. In addition, this page links to our head-to-head comparison of each pair.
ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity: The Short Answer
Choose Perplexity, first, for quick research with sources. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of its news answers had significant issues, the lowest of the assistants tested, against 36% for ChatGPT. It also shows no ads at all.
Choose Claude, by contrast, for writing, coding and the strongest model on a $20 plan, Opus 5.5. ChatGPT, finally, suits one subscription for many jobs, from deep research reports to images, Codex and Office add-ins.

Prices and Plans
At the standard tier, first, all three cost $20 a month. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro also come at $200 a year, while ChatGPT Plus is sold monthly only. Below that, however, ChatGPT Go costs $8 in the US and may show ads.
Students, meanwhile, can also get Perplexity’s Education Pro at $10 a month, as our guide to Perplexity for students covers. Our breakdown of what AI tools cost per year also adds each option up over twelve months.
Research and Sources
Perplexity has the strongest tested sourcing record of the three. Besides the EBU and BBC result, the Tow Center found in March 2025 that it had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools. Claude, however, was not tested in either study.
Arena’s Search board, however, points another way. There, for example, ChatGPT’s GPT-5.6 Sol placed first and Claude second, while Perplexity’s entries were Sonar API models that it retired on September 27, 2026. Our list of the best AI for research explains both measures.

Models on the $20 Plan
First, Claude Pro includes Opus 5.5, Anthropic’s top model, which placed fourth on Arena’s text board of September 30. ChatGPT Plus chat, by contrast, runs GPT-5.6 Sol, which placed 20th.
Perplexity Pro, meanwhile, offers a menu instead: Kimi K3, GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 5, among others. Its flagship options from OpenAI and Anthropic, though, sit on Max at $200 a month.
Writing and Coding
For writing, therefore, Claude leads: its Opus 5.5 placed first on Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, though on only 487 votes. ChatGPT’s model, by contrast, sat 14th. Perplexity, meanwhile, writes best from sources, as our list of the best AI for writing covers.
For coding, similarly, Claude Code scored 68 on Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index and Codex 63, at a lower cost per task. Perplexity, however, has no coding agent, so our list of the best AI for coding leaves it out.
Data, Ads and Privacy
All three train on personal chats by default, but each lets you opt out. At Perplexity, for example, the opt-out covers only data from then on. Claude, for its part, keeps chats for five years while training is on, as our list of the best AI tools for writers explains.
On ads, similarly, Claude and Perplexity show none, while ChatGPT shows ads on Free and Go in test regions. Business plans from all three, moreover, skip training by default.
Winners by Category
Overall, Perplexity wins on cited answers by default and the tested sourcing record. It also ties Claude on ads and yearly billing, and, in addition, it is cheapest for students.
Claude, on the other hand, wins on writing, coding and the model on its $20 plan. ChatGPT, for its part, wins on breadth, the Search board and the cheapest paid tier for non-students. Overall, in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity our scores put ChatGPT and Claude level at 3.6, with Perplexity at 3.4.
Which One to Choose
In short, take Perplexity if most of your work is quick research that needs a source for every claim. Claude, by contrast, suits writers and developers who want the strongest model on a $20 plan without ads.
ChatGPT, finally, suits one subscription for many kinds of work, too. For deeper pairs, see our comparisons of ChatGPT vs Perplexity and Claude vs Perplexity.
