Prices and Plans
At the standard tier, first, the three cost almost the same: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro at $20, Google AI Pro at $19.99. However, only Claude sells its standard plan yearly. It costs $200, or about $17 a month. Google AI Pro, moreover, bundles 5 TB of storage.
Below that, however, Gemini is cheapest. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, while ChatGPT Go costs $8 in the US and may show ads; Claude has no plan below Pro. Our breakdown of what AI tools cost per year adds up each option over twelve months.

Writing and Everyday Answers
On Arena’s text board of September 30, built on blind human votes, Claude’s Opus 5.5 placed fourth. Gemini 3.8 Flash, meanwhile, placed 11th, and ChatGPT’s best entry, GPT-5.6 Sol, 20th. On the creative-writing board of September 25, Opus 5.5 also placed first, though on only 487 votes.
Two cautions apply, though. Google’s unreleased Gemini 4 Argon topped the text board, and preference votes also do not measure accuracy. Our list of the best AI for writing covers the writing boards in more detail.
Accuracy and Reasoning
On Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index, Claude’s Opus 5.5 scores 58, ChatGPT’s GPT-6 Astra 53 and Gemini 3.8 Flash 41. On reasoning puzzles, by contrast, ChatGPT leads: GPT-6 Astra scored 95.0% on ARC-AGI-2, against 93.3% for Opus 5.5.
For news, in addition, the EBU and BBC study of October 2025 found significant issues in 36% of ChatGPT’s answers and 76% of Gemini’s. Claude, however, was not tested, so we cannot rank it on that measure. Our list of the best AI for research covers sourcing records.
Coding
Each assistant also comes with a coding agent. On Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index, Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scored 68, the top entry, though at $14.19 a task. Codex, for example, scored 63 at $1.04, while Google’s Antigravity scored 41.9, according to BenchLM’s mirror.
In addition, Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for free and Google AI accounts in June 2026, guides report. Our list of the best AI for coding ranks all the agents.
Where Each One Works
Gemini works inside Gmail and Google Docs on Google AI plans, and its Notebook keeps sources together. Our list of the best AI for email writing covers the Gmail side. ChatGPT, meanwhile, works inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint through a Microsoft add-in, with Word on every plan since September 17.
Claude, by contrast, works mostly in its own app, with connectors that read your files and mail for research. Its Projects also hold reference files and instructions, and its context also reaches 1M tokens on some models.
Data, Ads and Privacy
All three train on consumer chats by default, but each offers an opt-out. Claude keeps chats for five years while training is on and 30 days once it is off. Gemini, for its part, ties training to Keep Activity, however, which some connected features need.
On ads, Claude has pledged to stay ad-free, and Google says Gemini chats are not used for ads. ChatGPT, however, shows ads on Free and Go in test regions. Business plans from all three, finally, skip training by default, as our list of the best AI for business explains.
What Could Change Soon
Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, but as of October 2, only vetted cyber defenders can use it. Paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers come next, without a date, and Google has not mentioned AI Pro.
Similarly, OpenAI’s newest model, GPT-6.1 Sol, runs on Plus only in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not yet in the main chat. Therefore, either release could shift these rankings, and we will update this page when it does.
Winners by Category
Overall, Claude wins on independent scores, writing boards, coding agents and ads. ChatGPT, for its part, wins on reasoning puzzles, the tested news record and the breadth of tools, from deep research to Office add-ins.
