This Claude Code review covers Anthropic’s coding agent, which reads your repository, plans changes, edits files, runs commands and tests, and opens pull requests. It also runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, in a desktop app, on the web and from the Claude mobile app.

It holds the top entry on Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index, 68 with Sonnet 5.5 at maximum effort. That entry, however, cost $14.19 a task. Claude Code also comes only with paid plans, starting with Claude Pro at $20 a month.

Claude Code Review: Is It Worth It in 2026?

For developers who want the strongest independent agent score, yes. Claude Code leads the index and works across many editors, including inside Cursor. Pro also includes it at no extra cost, though its usage is shared with Claude chat.

For developers who care most about cost per task, Codex is the stronger value. At the same score of 63, Codex cost $1.04 a task against $3.33 for Claude Code, as our list of the best AI for coding shows.

What Claude Code Does

First, you describe a task in plain language, and Claude Code reads the relevant files, writes a plan and makes changes across the codebase. It then runs tests and commands, fixes what fails and, finally, can commit and open a pull request.

Plan mode, for example, separates exploring from editing, and a CLAUDE.md file holds standing instructions for each project. In addition, MCP servers connect it to tools such as Jira, Slack or Google Drive, according to Anthropic’s documentation. Our guide to using AI for coding projects walks through that workflow.

Where It Runs

The terminal version is the most complete, Anthropic’s documentation says. Native extensions, however, also cover VS Code, its forks such as Cursor and Windsurf, and JetBrains IDEs. The desktop app, in turn, adds visual diffs and parallel sessions.

On the web and in the Claude mobile app, meanwhile, sessions run on Anthropic’s cloud and keep going when you disconnect. Claude Code also takes tasks from Slack and runs in GitHub Actions. Our Claude vs Cursor comparison covers running it inside Cursor, and our Windsurf review covers Cognition’s Devin Desktop, formerly Windsurf, which also hosts Claude’s agent.

What It Costs

Claude Code comes with Claude’s paid plans, read on October 2, 2026. Usage on subscriptions, however, is shared with Claude chat, and usage credits cover work beyond the limit.

Anthropic also publishes no fixed message or task counts for these plans. Instead, limits run on five-hour sessions and weekly caps, as our comparison of AI tool limits explains.

What Independent Evaluations Show

On Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index, read on September 30, 2026, Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scored 68 at maximum effort, the top entry. At extra-high effort it scored 63 for $3.33 a task, and at high effort 55 for $1.24.

The catch, though, is cost at the top. The 68 run cost $14.19 and took about 1.5 hours per task, while Codex with GPT-6.1 Sol scored 63 for $1.04. So the effort setting matters as much as the tool, as our guide to Claude for coding explains.

Your Code and Training

On Claude’s personal plans, coding sessions can train Anthropic’s models unless you turn off Help improve Claude. With training on, Anthropic keeps that data for five years; with it off, for 30 days.

Team and Enterprise plans, by contrast, keep data out of training by default, and so do API accounts under Anthropic’s commercial terms. Our Claude review covers the consumer settings in full.

Security Record

On security, Claude Code has had several serious flaws, all patched. CVE-2025-59536, rated 8.7, let a malicious repository run commands before you approved the trust prompt. CVE-2026-21852 could leak an API key on opening a project, and CVE-2026-24887 bypassed command approval.

In May 2026, moreover, SecurityWeek reported a quieter fix. Anthropic had closed a network sandbox bypass without a CVE or a release-note entry, and the researcher who found it criticized that. In April, researchers also steered Claude Code Security Review, a GitHub Action, into leaking secrets through pull-request text. ⚠️ Keep Claude Code updated and approve commands on untrusted repositories.

Who Runs Claude Code

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation, with Amazon and Google among its large shareholders. In May 2026 it raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, Fortune reported.

Claude Code vs Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot

Codex comes with every ChatGPT plan, including a trial on Free. It also costs less per task at the same score, as our guide to ChatGPT for coding covers. Cursor, on the other hand, is a full AI editor whose own Composer 2.5 scored 62 in May at $0.07 a task, as our Cursor review explains.

GitHub Copilot Pro, meanwhile, costs $10 a month and works in most editors. It also lists Claude models, as our GitHub Copilot review covers. Our comparisons of Claude vs GitHub Copilot and Cursor alternatives go deeper.

Who Should Use Claude Code

Overall, Claude Code suits developers who want the highest independent agent score and work in a terminal or a supported editor. It also suits Claude subscribers who code part of the time, since Pro already includes it. Our DeepSeek vs Claude Code comparison also weighs a cheap open model against the top-scoring agent.

By contrast, it suits budget-sensitive teams that run many agent tasks less, because Codex costs less per point. Beginners can compare learning modes in our list of the best AI for coding beginners.

How We Research

This Claude Code review takes plans and surfaces from Anthropic’s Claude Code product page and platform documentation, read on October 2, 2026.

Scores come from Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index, and security findings from public CVE records and SecurityWeek. API prices also appear in our list of the best AI tools for developers. We run no coding tests of our own; our about page explains the criteria.

The top agent score, at a price

Claude Code holds the top entry on Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index and runs in many editors, and Pro already includes it. Against that, the top run costs far more per task than Codex, and usage is shared with chat and capped without published counts. Personal plans also train by default, and it has had several patched security flaws.

3.6

The Verdict

Claude Code is the agent to beat on independent scores, and it fits most editors. For Claude subscribers, it is already part of the plan.

The rest of this Claude Code review holds the score at 3.6. The top result is expensive per task, limits are shared and unpublished, and personal plans need a training opt-out. Try it on Pro, set the effort level deliberately, and compare its cost with Codex.
