Perplexity vs You.com used to be a contest between two AI search apps. In 2026, however, they serve different people. Perplexity remains a consumer search assistant with published plans, while You.com has turned into a search and research API for developers.
Our reviews also score Perplexity 3.4 and You.com 2.8. So the answer depends mostly on whether you search yourself or build something that searches.
Perplexity vs You.com: The Short Answer
Choose Perplexity, first, if you want an AI search app. It cites every answer, shows no ads, publishes its prices, and had the fewest significant issues in the EBU and BBC news study. Our Perplexity vs Consensus comparison also weighs price and data terms.
Choose You.com instead, however, if you are building an AI agent that needs web search. Its Search API is free for 100 calls a day, and every new account gets $100 in credit.

For Everyday Search
Perplexity Pro, for example, costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and its free plan also covers everyday searches. Every answer, moreover, links its sources, and Perplexity no longer shows ads, as our Perplexity for research guide explains. Our guide to Perplexity for students covers student offers.
You.com’s consumer app, however, still exists, but its plans appear only inside the app. Before its pivot, for example, You Pro cost $20 a month, and a $200 Max plan replaced Team in 2025.
For Developers
You.com, for example, publishes per-call prices: Search is free for 100 calls a day, then $5 per 1,000, and Research runs from $12 to $1,200 per 1,000 calls by effort level. Its Answer API, in addition, returns a cited answer in one call. Phind, a former developer search engine, shut down in January 2026, as our Phind page also explains.
Perplexity, by contrast, retired its Sonar API on September 27, 2026 and moved those models to presets in its Agent API. Our list of the best AI tools for developers covers API prices more broadly.

Accuracy and Evidence
On evidence, Perplexity had the fewest significant issues of the four assistants in the EBU and BBC news study, at 30%, and the lowest error rate in the Tow Center’s tests of AI search. You.com, however, took part in neither.
You.com claims 93.48% accuracy on SimpleQA for its Answer API, but that is its own figure. Our guide to AI benchmarks explained explains why vendor scores need care.
Data and Training
Perplexity trains on Free and Pro chats by default, and its opt-out covers only new data. You.com’s pricing page, meanwhile, dropped a “No model training” claim in August 2026 for “ZDR available,” a pricing tracker noted.
For either one, therefore, check the current terms before you send sensitive material. Our guide to which AI tools train on your data compares both.
Who Runs Each
Perplexity AI, for example, is a private San Francisco company. You.com, for its part, was founded in 2021 by Richard Socher and Bryan McCann and became a unicorn in 2025, Bloomberg reported. Our guide to who owns which AI tool covers Perplexity’s backers.
