This You.com review starts with a change of direction. You.com began in 2021 as an AI search engine for consumers, but since 2025 it has turned into a search and research API for developers who build AI agents.
Its public pricing page now lists only that API, and its consumer plans appear only inside the app. Therefore, if you want an AI search app, Perplexity or ChatGPT is the easier choice, as our list of Perplexity alternatives shows.
You.com Review: Is It Worth It in 2026?
For developers who need web search inside an AI agent, it can be. Search is free for the first 100 calls a day, every account gets $100 in credit, and prices run per call with no seats.
For everyday users, it is hard to recommend. You cannot see consumer prices before signing up, and the company’s focus has moved elsewhere. Our Perplexity review covers the closest consumer alternative.
What Happened to You.com
First, You.com sold consumer plans for years: Pro cost $20 a month, or $15 billed yearly, and Team $30. In September 2025, however, it replaced Team with a $200 Max plan built around unlimited research reports, a pricing tracker reports. Our Perplexity vs You.com comparison also covers both APIs.
The same month, Bloomberg reported that You.com had become a unicorn and was shifting away from its search engine plans. A month later, moreover, it launched a developer API, and by mid-2026 consumer plans had no public pricing page. Phind, a former developer search engine, shut down in January 2026, as our Phind page also explains.

What You.com Offers Now
The API suite, for example, covers five endpoints. Search returns web and news results, Contents also fetches full pages, and Answer returns a cited answer in one call. Research, in addition, runs multi-step searches at five effort levels, and Finance Research works on a dedicated financial index.
The consumer app also still offers chat with several labs’ models and research reports, according to past plan pages. However, You.com no longer publishes what each consumer plan includes today.
What You.com Costs
The pricing page, however, as a tracker read it on September 11, 2026, lists usage prices with no seats or platform fee.
| Product | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Search API | Free to 100 calls a day, then $5 per 1,000 | Web and news results for agents |
| Contents API | $1 per thousand pages | Full page text from known URLs |
| Answer API | $5 per 1,000 calls | A cited answer in one call |
| Research API | $12 to $1,200 per 1,000 calls | Five effort levels, lite to Frontier |
| Consumer plans | Not published | Shown only in the app |
Before the pivot, for example, You Pro cost $20 a month, and the $200 Max plan replaced Team in 2025. Whether those prices still apply inside the app, we could not confirm.

What Independent Evaluations Show
You.com claims 93.48% accuracy on the SimpleQA benchmark for its Answer API, and first place on DeepSearchQA for Research. Those are its own claims, though, and we found no independent test of its consumer app.
You.com was not part of the EBU and BBC news study or the Tow Center tests that our best AI for research list relies on. Our guide to AI benchmarks explained explains why vendor scores need care.
Your Data
You.com’s API is SOC 2 certified, and organizations can add zero data retention to an enterprise agreement. However, in August 2026 its pricing page swapped a “No model training” claim for “ZDR available,” a tracker noted.
Therefore, check the current terms before you send sensitive data, and ask for zero retention in writing. Our guide to which AI tools train on your data compares other tools.
Who Runs You.com
First, Richard Socher and Bryan McCann, both former Salesforce AI researchers, founded You.com in 2021. Its $50 million Series B in September 2024 drew NVIDIA and Salesforce Ventures, among others.
You.com vs Perplexity and ChatGPT
Perplexity still sells a clear consumer plan at $20, cites every answer, and led the EBU and BBC news study among the assistants tested. ChatGPT, meanwhile, offers deep research on every plan, as our ChatGPT vs Perplexity comparison explains. Our guide to Claude for research covers a third option.
For developers, by contrast, this You.com review finds a different rival set: other search APIs. Our list of the best AI tools for developers covers API prices.
Who Should Use You.com
Overall, You.com suits developers who need cited web search or deep research inside an AI agent, priced per call. It also suits teams that want a finance-specific research index. Our guide to ChatGPT for research, however, covers a consumer route.
By contrast, it suits everyday researchers and students less, since consumer prices are hidden and the product focus has moved. Our guide to Perplexity for research covers a simpler option, and our list of the best AI tools for researchers compares more.

How We Research
This You.com review takes API prices and the pricing history from a tracker that read you.com/pricing and archived plan pages, last on September 11, 2026. One example source is its You.com pricing page.
We could not read current consumer prices, which appear only in the app. Our about page explains the criteria, and our guide to fact-checking AI output applies to any cited answer.
You.com Review FAQ
Its consumer app still exists, but since 2025 You.com has focused on a search and research API for developers. Its public pricing page lists only the API.
The API Search endpoint is free for 100 calls a day, then $5 per 1,000. Consumer plans are shown only in the app; You Pro cost $20 a month before the pivot.
Its pricing page dropped a “No model training” claim in August 2026 and now says zero data retention is available. Check the current terms.
For consumers, Perplexity is easier: it publishes its prices, cites every answer and led the EBU and BBC news study. You.com now targets developers.

You.com
A developer API now, not a search app
You.com offers per-call search, answer and research APIs with a free daily allowance and $100 in credit. Against that, consumer prices are no longer public, its accuracy claims are its own, and its pricing page dropped a no-training claim in 2026.
The Verdict
You.com is no longer the consumer AI search engine many people remember. It is now mainly a per-call search and research API for developers, and on those terms its pricing is clear.
The rest of this You.com review holds the score at 2.8, mainly because consumers cannot see what they will pay. So developers can test it with the free allowance, while everyday users are better served by Perplexity or ChatGPT.
