Best AI Tools for Developers (2026): AI APIs Compared on Scores, Price and Data

Disclosure: LabFin is reader-supported. If you sign up for a tool through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions vary between providers and our ratings do not — here’s our full disclosure.

Of the tools on this list, the best AI tools for developers building with AI are the model APIs from Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, Google and DeepSeek. We rank them by the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index score of each provider’s top model on its API. The price per million tokens sits beside each score.

This page is for building products on AI models. For coding with an AI agent, our list of the best AI for coding ranks the agents instead.

Best AI Tools for Developers: The Short Answer

Among the best AI tools for developers on this list, Anthropic’s API has the top-scoring model, and it costs less than OpenAI’s flagship. Claude Opus 5.5 scores 58 on the index at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra scores 53 at $10 and $50. Our v0 review also covers Vercel’s interface builder and its credit-based pricing.

For cost, look further down. Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 and $3.75 through December 31, 2026, with a free tier. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 and $0.60 off-peak, with open weights. Their index scores are lower, and DeepSeek stores data in China.

How We Ordered the Best AI Tools for Developers

This list of the best AI tools for developers ranks each provider by the index score of its top model on its own API. We show the price beside each score, because the cheaper models often fit production better than the flagships. Scores and prices change often, so check each provider’s pricing page before you build.

We did not rank Perplexity, which retired its Sonar API on September 27, 2026 in favor of an Agent API. It has no model of its own on the index we used. Microsoft’s Copilot is not a model API. For more, our page on GitHub Copilot alternatives covers seven options ranked by our review scores.

1. Anthropic: Top Score, Mid-Range Price

Anthropic’s pricing docs list Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output, with a 1M-token context window. Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 and $10, Haiku 4.5 costs $1 and $5, and the Batch API halves those rates.

Anthropic does not train on API traffic by default. The catch: its flagship Fable 5.1 costs $10 and $50. Opus models can also use many tokens per task, as our guide to Claude for coding notes.

2. OpenAI: The Most Expensive Flagship

GPT-6 Astra scores 53 on the index and costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, BenchLM reports from OpenAI’s model docs. GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 and $10 and, OpenAI says, approaches Astra’s performance at about a fifth of its price.

OpenAI does not train on API data by default. Our guide to ChatGPT for coding covers its Codex agent.

3. SpaceXAI: Grok at Low Output Prices

Grok 4.7 scores 46 on the index and costs $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output, guides from Morph and GeoToolbox report. It also had the lowest hallucination rate of these flagships on Artificial Analysis’s knowledge test, at 29%.

The catch: the pages we read state no-training defaults for SpaceXAI’s business and enterprise products, not specifically for its API. Details are in our Grok review.

3.8 Flash: $0.75 / $3.75 through Dec 31, plus a free tier

4. Google: The Cheapest Mainstream Flash Model

Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output through December 31, 2026. After that it rises to $1.50 and $7.50, according to Google’s pricing page as summarized by BenchLM and Chapter. Google’s 3.1 Pro costs $2 and $12.

The Gemini API also has a free tier on Flash models. The catch: Google says free-tier content may be used to improve its products, while paid-tier content is not. Move to paid before handling customer data.

5. DeepSeek: Cheapest Tokens, Open Weights

DeepSeek V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output off-peak, with a 1M-token context and open weights. DeepSeek’s API news page says it supports OpenAI’s Responses API format.

The catch: DeepSeek stores personal data in China, and its model rarely declines questions it cannot answer. Self-hosting the open weights avoids sending prompts to DeepSeek, as our Claude vs DeepSeek comparison explains.

Which API for Which Build

The best AI tools for developers on this list depend on what you are building. Top quality per token: Anthropic’s Opus 5.5. Cheap production volume: Gemini 3.8 Flash or Claude Haiku 4.5. Lowest token cost: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. A free start: the Gemini API free tier, for non-sensitive prototypes. Self-hosting: DeepSeek’s open weights. Our Phind page also covers what happened to the developer search engine and what replaced it. Our guide on how to use AI for API integration covers the details.

Before You Ship

Run your own evaluation on your own tasks, since index scores average many tests that may not match your product. Use batch processing and prompt caching where providers offer them, and set spending limits.

Check each provider’s data terms for the tier you use. For consumer subscriptions rather than APIs, see our yearly cost breakdown.

How We Research

Index scores come from Artificial Analysis, read on September 30, 2026. Anthropic prices come from its own pricing docs, read on October 1, 2026. Other providers’ prices come from their pricing pages as summarized by BenchLM, Chapter and Morph.

We run no API benchmarks of our own. Our criteria live on our about page.
