DeepSeek vs Claude Code compares a model with an agent. DeepSeek, for example, offers cheap API tokens and open weights, but no coding agent of its own; you plug it into one such as Codex. Claude Code, by contrast, is Anthropic’s complete coding agent for your terminal and editor.
Our reviews also score Claude Code 3.6 and DeepSeek 3.0. So the choice depends on whether you want the strongest agent or the lowest cost and most control.
DeepSeek vs Claude Code: The Short Answer
Choose Claude Code, first, for the best independent results: Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scored 68 on the September version of Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index. It also comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month.
Choose DeepSeek instead, however, if token cost or control matters most. Its V4.1 Flash API costs $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak, and its open weights can run on your own hardware, away from its hosted service in China.
Head to Head
| Criterion | DeepSeek | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Model, chat app and API | Coding agent |
| Best agent result | 43.1 inside Codex, via BenchLM | 68 (Sonnet 5.5), September index |
| Price to start | API from $0.15 per 1M tokens | Claude Pro $20/mo |

Agent or Model
First, Claude Code reads your project, runs commands and tests, and edits files, with effort settings that trade cost for quality. It also runs in the terminal and integrates with editors, as our guide to using AI for debugging shows in practice.
DeepSeek, on the other hand, supplies the model only. Its V4 Pro scored 43.1 inside Codex on BenchLM’s mirror of the index, and our guide to DeepSeek for coding explains setups.

Cost
For example, Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 cost $14.19 a task at maximum effort on the index, and it comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month under shared usage limits. Our guide to Claude usage limits also explains those limits.
DeepSeek’s tokens, by contrast, cost a small fraction of that, and self-hosting the open weights costs only hardware. Our list of the best local AI tools therefore covers running it locally.
Data and Security
On data, DeepSeek’s hosted service stores data in China, which many companies cannot accept. Its open weights, however, let you avoid that entirely by running the model yourself.
Claude Code’s personal plans, meanwhile, train unless you opt out, and Claude Team skips training by default. Our guide to which AI tools train on your data also compares both.
Evidence
On evidence, Claude Code holds the top September entry on Artificial Analysis’s agent index. DeepSeek’s best entry, by contrast, comes from BenchLM’s mirror, well below the leaders.
Independent scores, however, measure typical tasks, so test both on your own code, and review every change as our guide to reviewing AI-generated code explains. Our guide to AI benchmarks explained also covers the index.
Who Owns Each
Anthropic, for example, a public benefit corporation, makes Claude Code, with Amazon and Google among its large shareholders. DeepSeek, by contrast, is a Chinese lab backed by the hedge fund High-Flyer. Our guide to who owns which AI tool also covers both.
Winners by Category
In short, Claude Code wins on agent results, a complete workflow and data hosted outside China. It also suits teams that want a ready agent.
DeepSeek, on the other hand, wins on token price, open weights and self-hosting. Overall, in DeepSeek vs Claude Code our scores favor Claude Code, 3.6 against 3.0.
Which One to Choose
Overall, take Claude Code if you want the strongest agent and can pay for it. By contrast, take DeepSeek inside an agent such as Codex if cost matters most, or self-host its weights if data must stay in-house.
Codex, moreover, scored 63 at about a third of Claude Code’s cost per task, as our Claude Code alternatives list notes.

How We Research
This DeepSeek vs Claude Code comparison also reuses the sources behind our reviews of each tool, including Artificial Analysis‘s Coding Agent Index, read on September 30, 2026, and DeepSeek’s API pricing.

DeepSeek vs Claude Code FAQ
Claude Code leads on independent agent results, scoring 68 on the September index. DeepSeek is far cheaper and can be self-hosted.
Not its own. You plug its API into an agent such as Codex, or run its open weights locally.
DeepSeek, by far: V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak. Claude Code comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month.
Its hosted service stores data in China. Self-hosting the open weights avoids that.
Yes. Some teams use Claude Code for hard tasks and DeepSeek for cheap, high-volume work.
The Verdict
Overall, DeepSeek vs Claude Code is a choice between the strongest agent and the cheapest, most controllable model. Claude Code leads on results; DeepSeek leads on price and openness.
Therefore, pick Claude Code for hard tasks, and DeepSeek, self-hosted or inside Codex, where cost or data control comes first.
