ChatGPT vs Notion AI is a choice between a general assistant and AI built into your team’s workspace. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and covers writing, research, coding and documents. Notion AI, by contrast, comes with Notion’s Business plan at $20 per member a month, billed yearly, and works on your own pages and databases.
However, the two also connect. For example, ChatGPT offers a Notion app that can read and, where supported, write to your workspace. Overall, our reviews score ChatGPT 3.6 and Notion AI 3.3.
ChatGPT vs Notion AI: The Short Answer
In short, choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant for many kinds of work, a free plan to start, or tools such as deep research, coding and image generation. Choose Notion AI instead if your team already keeps its docs and projects in Notion and wants AI that answers from them. Our list of Notion AI alternatives also ranks six options for answers from your own material.
On data, though, Notion AI starts stricter. By default, Notion and its AI providers do not train on your content. ChatGPT’s personal plans, however, train unless you opt out. Our Claude vs Notion AI comparison also covers where the two overlap.

Prices and Plans
First, ChatGPT has a free plan with unlimited everyday chats, though ads may appear on Free and Go. Plus, in turn, costs $20 a month without ads, and Business costs $25 a seat monthly or $20 billed yearly. Our comparison of free and paid AI tools shows what each upgrade adds.
Notion, on the other hand, gives Free and Plus only a trial of its AI. Instead, full Notion AI requires Business, at $20 per member a month billed yearly or about $24 monthly, guides report. In addition, Custom Agents cost $10 per 1,000 monthly credits after a free trial. Our breakdown of what AI tools cost per year compares both.
What Each One Does Best
ChatGPT covers the widest range. For example, it offers deep research with citations, Codex for code, image generation and voice, and ChatGPT Work also produces finished documents, decks and Sites. Our ChatGPT review covers each feature, and our guides to ChatGPT for coding and the best AI for research go deeper.
Notion AI, by contrast, works where your team’s knowledge already lives. For example, Notion Agent drafts, translates and fills in databases inside your pages, AI Meeting Notes summarizes meetings, and Enterprise Search answers across your workspace. Our Notion AI review explains each plan.
Using Them Together
First, ChatGPT’s Notion app, updated in March 2026, can read your pages and, where supported, write back to them. As a result, a ChatGPT user can pull Notion context into a chat without a Notion Business seat.
However, that route sends your Notion content to OpenAI under ChatGPT’s data rules, not Notion’s. Therefore, if your team chose Notion partly for its stricter AI terms, keep sensitive pages inside Notion AI.
Data and Training
Notion’s AI security page says that by default, Notion and its AI providers do not train on customer data, and contracts with those providers prohibit it. In addition, providers keep data for 30 days or less below Enterprise, and none on Enterprise.
ChatGPT’s personal plans, by contrast, train on your chats by default; you can opt out in Data controls. Business and Enterprise, moreover, keep data out of training by default.

Security Record
In September 2025, researchers showed that hidden text in a PDF could steer a Notion 3.0 agent into leaking workspace data through its web search tool. In response, Notion upgraded its detection, and admins can now turn off agents’ web access as well.
ChatGPT, for its part, also offers Lockdown Mode, which limits web and app access to reduce prompt-injection risk. On both, however, the same rule applies: be careful when an agent reads untrusted files and can also reach the web.
Who Owns Each
First, ChatGPT belongs to OpenAI, in which Microsoft owns about 27%, TechCrunch reported in July. Notion Labs, by contrast, is a private San Francisco company founded in 2013; a January 2026 share sale reportedly valued it at about $11 billion.
Where Each One Is Weakest
ChatGPT is weakest on data defaults and context. For instance, its personal plans train by default, and it knows your team’s knowledge only through connected apps.
Notion AI, meanwhile, is weakest on reach and evidence. It is most useful inside Notion, full access needs Business seats, and no independent evaluation scores its output.
Winners by Category
ChatGPT wins on breadth, the free plan and independent evidence. It also suits a single person better, too, since one Plus plan covers far more than chat.
On the other hand, Notion AI wins on data terms and on answers from your team’s own workspace. Team pricing, finally, is close to a tie at $20 billed yearly on both. Overall, in ChatGPT vs Notion AI our scores favor ChatGPT, 3.6 against 3.3.
When to Choose Each, or Both
Take ChatGPT when you need one assistant for many jobs, or when you want to start free. Then opt out in Data controls if your chats are private, and check our page on AI tool limits for caps.
By contrast, take Notion AI when your team already runs on Notion and wants AI on that knowledge with strict data terms. Alternatively, teams can use both: Notion AI for internal pages, ChatGPT for research and code. Our lists of the best AI for productivity and the best AI for summarization compare other options.

Notion AI does not by default, and its providers keep data for 30 days or less. ChatGPT’s personal plans train unless you opt out; Business does not.

The Verdict
