Perplexity for students is cited research on a student budget. Education Pro costs $10 a month for verified students and educators, half the price of Pro. Perplexity’s Help Center also says it includes everything in Pro. That covers Learn Mode, file uploads, premium models and the Computer agent.
In addition, its research record is the strongest of the assistants tested in two independent news studies. Even so, about a third of its news answers had issues, so citations still need checking. So this guide covers what students get, how to qualify, and how to use it well.
Perplexity for Students: The Short Answer
Perplexity for students makes the most sense for research papers and fact-checking. Every answer cites its sources, and Education Pro also adds Learn Mode and higher limits for $10 a month. Verification runs through SheerID, according to Perplexity’s Help Center.
For a tutor or a free premium year, look elsewhere first. Learn Mode comes with paid plans, not the free one, in the sources we read. Meanwhile, Google offers eligible college students a free year of Google AI Pro. Our guide to Gemini for students covers that offer, and our Gemini vs Perplexity comparison sets the two side by side.
What Perplexity Offers Students
Cited answers. Each answer links to the sources behind it. As a result, it is easier to trace a claim back to a paper or article. The free plan also gives practically unlimited basic searches and three Pro Searches a day. Our guide to using AI for learning also covers five techniques that make study stick.
Learn Mode and Research. Perplexity lists Learn Mode among the Pro features that Education Pro includes. Research mode, however, is limited to one query a month on the free plan. Our guide to Perplexity for research explains how it works.
Uploads, models and agents. Education Pro adds file and image uploads and premium models, and it includes Perplexity Computer, which runs on credits. However, GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 sit on Max, not on Pro.
| Plan | Price | What it gives students |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Basic searches with citations; 3 Pro Searches a day; 1 Research a month |
| Education Pro | $10/mo | Everything in Pro, incl. Learn Mode; verified students and educators |
| Pro | $20/mo or $200/yr | Weekly limits without a number; model menu; Computer on credits |
| Max | $200/mo or $2,000/yr | Flagship models such as GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 |

How to Get Education Pro
You verify student or educator status through SheerID. The email you verify with can also differ from your Perplexity account email, guides report. Perplexity’s plan comparison lists Education Pro at $10 a month with SheerID verification.
The plan targets university-level students and faculty. For example, a guide from AI Student Discount says high school students are not eligible under the official requirements. So check eligibility on Perplexity’s page before you subscribe.
How Accurate Is Perplexity for Coursework?
Perplexity has the strongest tested record of the assistants studied. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of its news answers had a significant issue. In addition, 15% had sourcing problems. By contrast, the figures for Gemini were 76% and 72%.
Perplexity also had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools in the Tow Center study of March 2025, at 37%. Still, neither study tested Claude, and both tested free versions, as our list of the best AI for research covers.

How to Use Perplexity Well for Papers
Open every cited source and check that it says what the answer claims. After all, a real page can still fail to support a sentence. Then quote the original paper or article in your work, not Perplexity, because sources are what instructors check. Our Perplexity pricing guide covers prices plan by plan.
Use Learn Mode or follow-up questions to understand a topic, rather than copying an answer. Also ask your instructor what is allowed, because schools set their own rules on AI.
Your Data as a Student
Perplexity trains on Free, Pro and Max searches by default. Its opt-out is the AI data retention toggle, but it covers only data collected after you switch it off. So turn it off before you upload drafts or personal notes.
Where Perplexity Runs Short for Students
Perplexity documents no teen version, and Learn Mode also needs a paid plan in the sources we read. Pro limits also come without a published number, as our comparison of AI tool limits shows. Finally, the flagship models need the $200 Max plan.
Who Should Use Perplexity for Students, and What to Use Instead
Perplexity suits university students who research a lot and want a source for every answer. Education Pro at $10 a month is the cheapest way to get its paid features, as our list of the cheapest useful AI tools also notes.
Other tools fit other students. ChatGPT allows users from 13 with a parent’s consent, as our guide to ChatGPT for students explains. Claude suits adult learners who want a Socratic tutor, as our guide to Claude for students covers. Our list of the best AI for students compares them all.
