Prices and Plans
Gemini starts cheaper. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage, and Google AI Pro $19.99 with 5 TB and a 1M-token context. Every Google AI plan bills monthly.
Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year. Its Education Pro costs $10 a month for verified students and educators. Our list of the cheapest useful AI tools covers the free options of both.
Research Features
Gemini writes reports. Its Deep Research uses Google Search by default, can add your Gmail or Drive, and exports reports to Google Docs. Google AI Pro raises it to 20 reports a day, 9to5Google reports, and Gemini Notebook answers from up to 300 of your own sources.
Perplexity answers with sources. Every answer carries citations, Free includes one Research query a month, and Pro raises the limits. Its Pro plan also offers a menu of models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Moonshot, though their flagships sit on Max.
What the Independent Evidence Shows
On sourcing, Perplexity leads by a wide margin. In the EBU and BBC study, significant sourcing problems appeared in 15% of Perplexity’s news answers and 72% of Gemini’s. In the Tow Center study of March 2025, Perplexity had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools, at 37%.
On model boards, Gemini has the entries. Gemini 3.8 Flash placed 11th on Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026, and gemini-3.1-pro-grounding ninth on the Search board of August 24. Perplexity’s own Sonar models placed 29th and 31st on that Search board before it retired them on September 27.
⚠️ Both studies tested older free versions. Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, and no sourcing study has tested it yet. Our list of the best AI for research ranks the field on the same evidence.
Ads, Training and Data
Perplexity shows no ads; Google says it does not use Gemini chats for ads. Perplexity phased out its ads in February 2026.
Both train on consumer chats by default. Gemini’s training follows Keep Activity, and with it on, some chats may go to human reviewers and stay up to three years. Turning it off disconnects Gmail and Drive in Gemini. Perplexity’s opt-out is the AI data retention toggle, which covers data collected after you switch it off.

Where Each One Is Weakest
Gemini is weakest on sourcing. Its tested record is the worst of the assistants in the EBU and BBC study. Keeping Gmail and Drive in Gemini also means leaving training on.
Perplexity is weakest on depth and price floor. Its $20 plan lacks the flagship models from OpenAI and Anthropic, it documents no report editor, and its cheapest general paid plan costs $20.
