ChatGPT for Students (2026): Study Mode, Free Plus Months and the Rules

ChatGPT for students starts free: study mode, which guides you with questions instead of handing over answers, works on every plan. Eligible US college and graduate students can also claim four free months of ChatGPT Plus if they act by October 31, 2026.

Younger students get a different product. Since August 18, 2026, OpenAI places anyone it estimates to be under 18 into ChatGPT for Teens. That version adds stronger protections and optional parental controls. This guide covers what each plan offers students, the rules on age and academic integrity, and how to check ChatGPT’s answers.

ChatGPT for Students: The Short Answer

ChatGPT for students is most useful as a tutor, not an essay writer. Study mode, quizzes and deep research help you understand material and find sources. OpenAI’s own terms bar presenting its output as human-written when it was not, and your school’s rules apply on top.

For money, start with the free plan and check your school. Free includes study mode, and many universities provide ChatGPT Edu. Eligible US students can add four free months of Plus through OpenAI’s Back to School offer. It renews at $20 a month unless you cancel.

What ChatGPT Offers Students

Study mode. It responds with guiding questions and step-by-step help rather than finished answers. OpenAI’s Help Center says it is available across plans on web, iOS and Android, as AI Toolbox quotes it. OpenAI added interactive quizzes in August 2026.

Research and writing. Deep research returns reports with citations you can check, as our guide to ChatGPT for research explains. Writing blocks help draft and revise, covered in our guide to ChatGPT for writing.

The Back to School Offer

OpenAI’s Back to School offer gives eligible students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including ChatGPT Work. It covers full-time and part-time students at eligible US degree-granting schools. They verify enrollment through SheerID and must claim by October 31, 2026.

Existing Plus subscribers billed directly by ChatGPT can claim it too, though guides report that the offer excludes subscriptions bought through Apple or Google. After the four months, Plus renews at $20 a month unless you cancel, so set a reminder. Over a year, that comes to $240, as our breakdown of yearly AI costs shows, and the offer does not cover students outside the US.

Age Rules and ChatGPT for Teens

ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. OpenAI’s Help Center says users from 13 to 18 need a parent’s consent. Since August 18, 2026, anyone OpenAI estimates to be under 18, or who states an age of 13 to 17, moves into ChatGPT for Teens.

That version adds age-appropriate safeguards, homework reminders that may suggest study mode, and study hours. Through parental controls, a linked parent can reduce sensitive content, turn off voice mode and start new chats in study mode. The parent can also decide whether the teen’s chats help train models. OpenAI says parents cannot read a teen’s conversations.

Academic Integrity

Schools set their own rules on AI, and they differ by course. OpenAI’s Terms of Use add one rule of their own: you may not present ChatGPT’s output as human-generated when it was not. Ask your instructor what is allowed before you use it on graded work.

Study mode is built for learning rather than finished answers, and parents of teens can make it the default. Keep your own drafts and notes, so you can show how your work developed.

Check Answers and Sources

ChatGPT gets things wrong. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 36% of its news answers had at least one significant issue. Significant sourcing problems showed up in 24%. Artificial Analysis also found that GPT-5.6 Sol, the Plus chat model, rarely declines questions it cannot answer.

Open every citation before you use it, and quote the original source rather than ChatGPT. For assignments that depend on sources, Perplexity puts citations on every answer and offers Education Pro at $10 a month, as our Perplexity review covers.

Your Data as a Student

On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, ChatGPT trains on your chats by default until you turn it off in Data controls. ChatGPT Edu, run by universities, skips training by default. For teens, a linked parent can also switch training off through parental controls.

Where ChatGPT Runs Short for Students

The free plan limits deep research and uploads, and OpenAI publishes no fixed counts for any plan. The student offer is US-only and temporary. And no plan makes ChatGPT a reliable source on its own, so its answers need checking.

Who Should Use ChatGPT for Students, and What to Use Instead

ChatGPT suits students who use it to learn, practice and find sources. Study mode, quizzes and cited reports fit that well, and the free plan covers the basics.

Other tools fit specific needs. Perplexity suits sourced research, and our list of the best ChatGPT alternatives covers the rest. For plan details, see our ChatGPT review.

How We Research

This guide draws on OpenAI’s student offer article, its ChatGPT for Teens announcement and its parental controls guide, read on October 1, 2026. Accuracy figures come from the EBU and BBC and Artificial Analysis, each dated where used.

We run no tests with students and show no sample answers, since those would age with every model update. Our criteria live on our about page.
