Claude for students starts with an age rule: Anthropic requires users to be at least 18. That makes it a tool for university students and adult learners, not for school pupils. For them, the free plan includes a Learning style that guides with questions instead of handing over answers.

There is no individual student discount. Instead, Anthropic sells Claude for Education to universities, and students at partner schools get access through their institution. This guide covers what each route offers, how Claude compares with other tools for students, and what to check.

Claude for Students: The Short Answer

Claude for students works best for adult learners who want a tutor, not an answer machine. The free Learning style asks guiding questions, and Pro at $20 a month or $200 a year adds Research with citations and Claude Code. Check first whether your university offers Claude for Education.

Younger students need a different tool. ChatGPT allows users from 13 with a parent’s consent and offers a teen mode, as our guide to ChatGPT for students explains. Claude has no teen version in the sources we read.

Three Ways to Get Claude as a Student

The free plan. Claude Free includes the Learning style, picked from the style menu, along with web search with citations and up to five projects. Anthropic opened the Learning style to all users in 2025, reports from the time say.

Pro. Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, with no student price on Anthropic’s plan page, a guide from Atlas notes. It adds Opus 5.5, Research with citations, as Anthropic’s Help Center describes, and Claude Code.

Claude for Education. Universities buy this campus-wide plan, and students cannot purchase it individually. Guides describe it as including Learning mode, Canvas LMS integration and access to Wiley’s research content, with student conversations excluded from training by default.

Learning, Research and Writing

Learning. The Learning style answers with questions and hints, so you work through a problem rather than copying a solution. In Claude Code, a Learning output style asks you to write parts of the code yourself. Our list of the best AI for beginners in coding covers it.

Research. On paid plans, Research runs several searches and returns cited answers, and it can read connected Google Docs. No major news-accuracy study has tested Claude, so open every citation, as our guide to Claude for research explains.

Writing. Claude’s Opus 5.5 placed first on Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, 2026, on 487 votes. Our guide to Claude for writing covers its writing tools and limits.

How Claude Compares for Students

The biggest difference is age. Claude requires 18 or older, while ChatGPT allows 13 to 17 with a parent’s consent and switches them into ChatGPT for Teens. All three main assistants now offer a guided mode: Claude’s Learning style, ChatGPT’s study mode and Gemini’s Guided Learning.

On price, Claude has no student offer of its own. ChatGPT gives eligible US college students four free months of Plus until October 31, 2026. Google offers verified students a free year of its paid plan, Glasp reports. Perplexity’s Education Pro costs $10 a month.

Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year

Academic Integrity

Schools set their own rules on AI, and they differ by course. Ask your instructor what is allowed before using Claude on graded work. Keep your own drafts and notes so you can show how your work developed. The Learning style helps here, because it is built to guide rather than to write for you.

Your Data as a Student

On Free and Pro, Claude trains on chats by default until you turn off Help improve Claude. With training on, Anthropic keeps chats for five years. Anthropic’s retention page says Incognito chats stay out of training. Claude for Education accounts exclude student conversations from training by default, guides report.

Where Claude Runs Short for Students

The 18+ rule rules out school pupils. There is no individual student discount, Research and Claude Code are paid-only, and Anthropic publishes no message counts for any plan. For what each free plan leaves out, see our free vs paid comparison.

Who Should Use Claude for Students, and What to Use Instead

Claude suits university students and adult learners who want a Socratic tutor and strong writing help. It is a better fit still if your university already provides Claude for Education.

Younger students and price-sensitive students have other options. ChatGPT allows teens with consent and has a US student offer until October 31, and Gemini offers verified students a free year, Glasp reports. Details on Claude’s plans are in our Claude review.
