How We Ordered the Best AI for Students

This list of the best AI for students counts three documented needs. First comes a guided learning mode on the free plan. Next comes a student offer, and last comes access for students under 18, since many are.

ChatGPT meets all three, Gemini two, and Claude and Perplexity one each. Our review scores, as on our list of the best AI tools, break that tie in Claude’s favor. We left Microsoft Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek off because the sources behind our reviews document no student features for them.

1. ChatGPT: The Most Student Needs Covered

Study mode answers with guiding questions instead of finished answers, and OpenAI makes it available across plans. Since August 18, 2026, users OpenAI estimates to be under 18 also get ChatGPT for Teens, with optional parental controls.

Eligible US college students can claim four free months of Plus through OpenAI’s Back to School offer, until October 31, 2026. The catch: Plus then renews at $20 a month, and the offer covers only US students. For research papers, our guide to ChatGPT for research covers how to check deep research reports. Our guide to ChatGPT for students covers the details.

2. Gemini: The Best Deal for College Students

Google offers eligible college students a free year of Google AI Pro in the US, its plan page says. In more than 140 other countries, the free year covers Google AI Plus. Guided Learning also works on the free plan, guides report. In addition, Gemini Notebook answers from up to 50 of your own sources for free, as our guide to Gemini for research covers.

The catch: Google AI plans are for users 18 and older, and Gemini’s tested news accuracy is weak. In an EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 76% of its news answers had a significant issue. Our guide to Gemini for students covers the details.

3. Claude: A Socratic Tutor for Adults

Claude’s Learning style, picked from the style menu, also guides with questions and hints. In Claude Code, a Learning style also asks you to write parts of the code yourself. Our list of the best AI for beginners in coding covers it, and our guide to Claude for writing covers its writing tools.

The catch: Anthropic requires users to be at least 18, and it offers no individual student discount. So students get campus access only where a university buys Claude for Education. Our guide to Claude for students covers the details.

4. Perplexity: Cited Answers on a Student Budget

Perplexity’s Education Pro costs $10 a month for verified students and educators, half the price of Pro. Every answer carries citations. Perplexity also had the lowest error rate in two independent news studies, as our list of the best AI for research covers.

The catch: Perplexity’s Learn Mode comes with Pro and Education Pro, not the free plan, its Help Center says. Its Research mode is also limited to one query a month on the free plan, as our guide to Perplexity for research explains. Details are in our Perplexity review.

Which Tool for Which Student

The best AI for students on this list depends on who you are. Under 18: ChatGPT, with a parent’s consent. US college student: Gemini for a free year of Pro, or ChatGPT for four free months of Plus. Writing-heavy courses: Claude, if you are 18 or older. Research papers: Perplexity for cited answers, then check every source. Our guide to avoiding overuse of AI in writing also offers a quick self-check.

Use AI to Learn, Not to Skip Learning

Schools set their own rules on AI, so ask your instructor before using it on graded work. Turn on the learning mode, type your own drafts, and open every citation before you rely on it. Also, turn off training on your chats if you paste anything private, since most consumer plans train by default.
