Perplexity for research is built around one habit: every answer cites its sources. It also has the strongest tested record of the assistants in two independent studies of AI answers to news questions. Our page on Perplexity for summarization covers upload limits and cited summaries of files and pages.
That record still leaves room for error, and its deeper Research mode is tightly limited on the free plan. This guide covers what each plan allows, what the evidence shows, and how to check Perplexity’s answers.
Perplexity for Research: The Short Answer
Perplexity for research is the strongest pick on the evidence for quick, sourced answers. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of its news answers had a significant issue and 15% had sourcing problems. Those were the lowest shares of the four assistants tested. In the Tow Center study of March 2025, it had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools, at 37%.
For long reports, it offers less than its rivals. Free includes one Research query a month, Pro lists weekly limits without numbers, and Perplexity documents no report editor. Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year and shows no ads.
What Perplexity Offers Researchers
Cited answers. Every answer carries citations, and Free includes unlimited basic searches and three Pro Searches a day, Perplexity’s Help Center says.
Research mode. Research runs a longer, multi-step search for deeper questions. Free allows one a month, Pro lists weekly limits for average use without a number, and Enterprise Pro allows 50 a month.
A model menu. Perplexity’s Help Center lists Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5 and Kimi K3 on Pro. GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 sit on Max only, and Perplexity notes that a model inside its product can behave differently from the same model elsewhere.
| Plan | Price | Research limits |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited basic searches; 3 Pro Searches a day; 1 Research a month |
| Education Pro | $10/mo | Pro features for verified students and educators |
| Pro | $20/mo or $200/yr | Weekly limits, no published number; model menu |
| Max | $200/mo or $2,000/yr | Higher limits; GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 |
| Enterprise Pro | $40/seat/mo | 400 Pro Searches a week; 50 Research a month; no training |

What the Independent Evidence Shows
On sourcing, Perplexity leads the tested field. In the EBU and BBC study, significant issues appeared in 30% of Perplexity’s news answers, against 36% for ChatGPT, 37% for Copilot and 76% for Gemini. Sourcing problems showed up in 15% of Perplexity’s answers, the same as Copilot.
The Tow Center study found a wider gap. Perplexity answered 37% of citation queries wrong, the lowest of eight AI search tools, against 67% for ChatGPT Search.
⚠️ The best tested record is still not reliable on its own. Even Perplexity had significant issues in close to a third of news answers. Both studies tested free versions in 2025, and neither tested Claude. Our list of the best AI for research ranks the field on this evidence.

How to Check a Perplexity Answer
Open each cited source and confirm that it says what the answer claims, since a citation can point to a real page that does not support the sentence. Check the date of each source for anything time-sensitive.
For anything you publish, quote the original source rather than Perplexity. When a question matters, compare the answer with a second tool. Our Perplexity pricing guide covers prices plan by plan.
Your Research Data
Perplexity trains on Free, Pro and Max searches by default. Its opt-out is the AI data retention toggle, and it covers only data collected after you switch it off. Enterprise plans do not train on your data.
Perplexity has also faced lawsuits from publishers, including Dow Jones and The New York Times, over how it uses their content, as our Perplexity review covers. Those cases concern publishers’ rights rather than users’ data.
Where Perplexity Runs Short for Research
Depth is the main gap. Research is limited to one query a month on Free, Pro limits carry no number, and Perplexity documents no report editor or Word and PDF export. The flagship models from OpenAI and Anthropic need Max at $200 a month. Our guide to using AI for competitive research also covers public sources and cited summaries.
Who Should Use Perplexity for Research, and What to Use Instead
Perplexity suits researchers who ask many questions and need a source for each answer. It fits fact-checking, background reading and quick literature scans, and it shows no ads.
Other tools fit longer work. ChatGPT’s deep research exports reports to Word and PDF, as our guide to ChatGPT for research explains. Claude’s Research reads your Gmail and Docs, as our guide to Claude for research covers. Gemini gives Deep Research for free, as our guide to Gemini for research covers.

How We Research
This guide draws on Perplexity’s pricing hub and Help Center, read on September 30 and October 1, 2026. Accuracy figures come from the EBU and BBC study of October 2025 and the Tow Center study of March 2025.
We run no research tests of our own. For Perplexity against ChatGPT, see our ChatGPT vs Perplexity comparison, and our criteria live on our about page.
