Claude vs GitHub Copilot is a choice between Anthropic’s assistant with its own coding agent and a coding assistant built into your editor. Claude Pro costs $20 a month and also includes Claude Code. GitHub Copilot Pro, by contrast, costs $10 and adds unlimited completions in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and other editors.

However, the two overlap heavily. Copilot’s paid plans run Claude models such as Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, and GitHub lists Anthropic’s Claude as a third-party agent inside Copilot. Overall, our reviews score Claude 3.6 and GitHub Copilot 3.5.

Claude vs GitHub Copilot: The Short Answer

Choose GitHub Copilot if you mainly write code and want help inside the editor you already use, for less money. Moreover, its paid plans list Claude’s models alongside OpenAI’s and Google’s. Choose Claude instead if you want Anthropic’s own agent, Claude Code, plus one assistant for writing and research.

On agent scores, though, only one side has a number. Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scored 68 on Artificial Analysis’s September index at maximum effort, though at $14.19 a task. Copilot’s own agent, by contrast, has no entry, and GitHub publishes no SWE-bench score for it.

Prices and Usage

Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $200 a year billed up front. Claude Code comes with Pro and Max, and its usage counts against the same five-hour and weekly limits as chat. Above that, Max costs $100 for five times Pro usage or $200 for twenty times, while Free includes no Claude Code.

GitHub Copilot Pro costs $10 a month with 1,500 AI credits, of which 500 are a flex allotment that GitHub says can change. Beyond Pro, Pro+ costs $39 and Max $100. Completions stay unlimited on every paid plan, so only chat and agent work draw down credits.

For teams, Copilot Business costs $19 a seat, while Claude Team Standard costs $25 a seat monthly or $20 billed yearly. Our breakdown of what AI tools cost per year puts both next to the other plans.

Three Ways to Use Claude for Code

First, you can use Claude Code on a Claude plan, which runs Anthropic’s own agent in the terminal and in editors such as VS Code and JetBrains IDEs. Second, you can also pick Claude models inside Copilot’s chat, agent mode and cloud agent. Finally, GitHub lists Anthropic’s Claude as a third-party agent inside Copilot, in public preview.

The real difference is the agent around the model, because it changes results and cost. In Copilot, Claude models draw down AI credits at their token prices. On a Claude plan, by contrast, they count against your plan’s usage limits. Our guide to Claude for coding covers the Claude Code setup.

Three ways to use Claude for coding: Claude Code on a Claude plan, Claude models in Copilot, Claude agent in Copilot

Where You Code

First, Copilot works inside Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse, as well as on GitHub.com and in a CLI. For example, its cloud agent takes a GitHub issue, works in GitHub Actions and opens a pull request. Our GitHub Copilot review covers each surface.

Claude Code, on the other hand, is terminal-first and also runs in IDEs. Claude Pro adds chat, Research and projects, so one plan covers code and writing alike, as our Claude review explains.

What the Agent Scores Show

Artificial Analysis tests coding agents together with their models, because the agent changes results. On its September index, Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scored 68 at maximum effort, at $14.19 and about 1.5 hours per task. At extra-high effort it scored 63 for $3.33, and at high effort 55 for $1.24.

By contrast, we found no Copilot entry on that index. GitHub describes its cloud agent as best for low-to-medium complexity tasks in well-tested codebases, as a Firecrawl review quoted it. In addition, our list of the best AI for coding tracks the scored agents.

Data and Privacy

Both train on personal plans by default, however. Claude’s Free, Pro and Max plans train on chats, including Claude Code sessions, unless you turn off Help improve Claude. Likewise, since April 24, 2026, GitHub uses interaction data from Copilot Free, Pro and Pro+ to train its models unless you opt out under Privacy.

Business plans, by contrast, flip that default on both sides. Claude Team and Enterprise keep data out of training, and Copilot Business and Enterprise are excluded from GitHub’s training change. Inside Copilot, GitHub says Claude models run under zero data retention, except Fable, for which Anthropic keeps data by default for safety checks.

Security Record

In April 2026, researchers showed that prompt injection in pull requests and issues could steer both Copilot’s agent and Claude Code Security Review, a GitHub Action, into leaking secrets. In addition, Copilot had RoguePilot in Codespaces earlier that year, which GitHub patched.

Claude Code’s Manual mode, meanwhile, starts read-only, keeps writes inside the working folder and does not approve network commands automatically, according to Anthropic’s docs. Still, the shared lesson is that text an agent reads can steer it, so keep the guardrails on.

Who Owns Each

First, Anthropic is a public benefit corporation, with Amazon and Google among its large shareholders. Microsoft also committed up to $5 billion to Anthropic in November 2025. GitHub, meanwhile, has belonged to Microsoft since 2018, so Microsoft has ties to both. GitHub Copilot is separate from Microsoft Copilot, which our Microsoft Copilot review covers.

Where Each One Is Weakest

Claude is weakest on price for coding alone and on editor integration. For example, Pro costs twice Copilot Pro, Claude Code shares limits with chat, and the top agent score costs $14.19 a task. In addition, Free users get no Claude Code.

GitHub Copilot is weakest on independent evidence and budget certainty. No independent benchmark scores its own agent, and part of each credit allowance can change. Finally, it offers no general assistant for research or writing.

Winners by Category

Price for coding: GitHub Copilot, at $10 against $20. Editor coverage and completions: Copilot. Model choice: Copilot, which offers Claude’s models alongside OpenAI’s and Google’s. Team seat: Copilot, at $19 against $25 monthly.

Independent agent score: Claude, with 68 against no Copilot entry. One plan beyond code: Claude. Training defaults: a tie, since both train on personal plans and exclude business plans. Overall, in Claude vs GitHub Copilot our scores are close, 3.6 against 3.5.

When to Choose Each, or Both

Take GitHub Copilot when code is most of what you do and you want completions in your current editor, with Claude models a click away. Then opt out of training under Privacy, and also set a budget for extra credits.

Take Claude instead when you want Anthropic’s own agent in the terminal, the top September entry, or an assistant for writing and research too. Then turn off Help improve Claude. Alternatively, keep both: Copilot for completions, Claude Code for longer tasks. For OpenAI’s agent, see our guide to ChatGPT for coding.
