Perplexity vs DeepSeek is a choice between sourced answers and free, open models. For example, Perplexity cites every answer and had the strongest record in two independent sourcing studies. DeepSeek, by contrast, is free in its app and has open weights and cheap API tokens. However, its privacy policy says it stores data in China.
Our reviews score Perplexity 3.4 and DeepSeek 3.0. So the sections below compare evidence, price, data and who each one suits.
Perplexity vs DeepSeek: The Short Answer
Choose Perplexity for research you need to trust; choose DeepSeek for free chat, cheap API work or self-hosting. In the Tow Center study of March 2025, Perplexity had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools. DeepSeek Search was among those tested, too. Perplexity also shows no ads, and it stores data with a US company.
DeepSeek wins on cost and openness. Its app is free, its V4.1 Flash API costs $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak, and its weights are also downloadable. However, its model declined only 4% of the questions it could not answer on Artificial Analysis’s test.
Head to Head
| Criterion | Perplexity | DeepSeek |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Cited basic searches; 3 Pro Searches a day | Free app; no paid consumer plan |
| Standard plan | Pro $20/mo or $200/yr | API only, from $0.15 per 1M input |
| Citations | On every answer | Not documented in our sources |
| Tow Center, Mar 2025 | 37% wrong, lowest of 8 | DeepSeek Search tested; not lowest |
| Open weights | None | V4.1 Flash, downloadable |
| Where data is stored | Perplexity AI, a US company | People’s Republic of China |
| Our score | 3.4 | 3.0 |

Price and Plans
At the start, both cost nothing. Perplexity Free gives practically unlimited basic searches with citations and three Pro Searches a day. DeepSeek’s app, meanwhile, is free with no paid tier.
For more, Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Education Pro $10 for verified students. DeepSeek, in contrast, charges only for its API. V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 and $0.60 per million tokens off-peak, as our list of the cheapest useful AI tools covers.
What the Independent Evidence Shows
On sourcing, Perplexity leads. The Tow Center study tested eight AI search tools, including DeepSeek Search. Perplexity answered the fewest citation queries wrong, at 37%, as our list of the best AI for research covers. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of Perplexity’s news answers had a significant issue. DeepSeek, however, was not part of that study.
On model boards, only DeepSeek has its own entries. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash scores 39 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index. It also placed 40th on Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026. Perplexity, in contrast, runs a menu of other companies’ models on Pro, such as Claude Sonnet 5 and Kimi K3.
⚠️ DeepSeek tends to guess. On Artificial Analysis’s knowledge test, V4.1 Flash declined only 4% of the questions it could not answer. Its knowledge index was also minus 5.3. So check its answers against a source, as our guide to Perplexity for research suggests for any AI tool.
Where Your Data Goes
DeepSeek stores your data in China. Its privacy policy says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China. It also keeps chat data as long as the account exists, and it allows sharing with authorities under legal requests.
Perplexity, for its part, trains on Free, Pro and Max searches by default. Its opt-out, however, covers only data collected after you switch it off. Enterprise Pro, however, skips training altogether.
⚠️ Several governments restrict DeepSeek. Italy blocked the app in January 2025, and Australia banned it from government devices, Reuters reported. So check your employer’s policy before using it for work.

Self-Hosting and Coding
DeepSeek’s open weights let developers run V4.1 Flash on their own servers, which keeps prompts away from DeepSeek. Its API also offers one-click setup for Codex, its news page says, as our guide to DeepSeek for coding covers.
Perplexity, by contrast, offers no open weights. It also retired its Sonar API on September 27, 2026 in favor of an Agent API.
Where Each One Is Weakest
Perplexity is weakest on price and depth. Its paid plan costs $20 a month, and its flagship models sit on Max. Research is also limited on the free plan.
DeepSeek is weakest on data and admitting unknowns. Your chats are stored in China, and several governments restrict the app. In addition, its model rarely declines a question it cannot answer.
Winners by Category
Sourcing record: Perplexity, because it had the lowest error rate of the eight tools tested. Citations: Perplexity, since every answer carries them. Price and open weights: DeepSeek, with a free app, cheap API and downloadable model. Data location and workplace use: Perplexity, while DeepSeek stores data in China. Ads: roughly a tie, because Perplexity shows none and DeepSeek rules out targeted advertising.
When to Choose DeepSeek Instead
Take DeepSeek for free, low-stakes chat, cheap API work or self-hosting, because that is where its price matters. Still, keep personal, client and work data out of the app.
Take Perplexity, however, for research, fact-checking and anything you will publish. For each against other rivals, see our Perplexity vs Grok comparison and our Gemini vs DeepSeek comparison. Similarly, our ChatGPT vs DeepSeek comparison covers OpenAI’s side.

How We Research
This comparison reuses the sources behind our Perplexity review and our DeepSeek review, rechecked on October 2, 2026. Sourcing figures come from the Tow Center and the EBU and BBC, and model scores from Artificial Analysis and Arena.
Both scores come from the same five criteria, applied to each tool in its own review. We run no tests of our own. The criteria behind every score live on our about page.
