Every price below comes from each company’s plan and help pages, read on September 30 and October 1, 2026. For yearly totals, see our breakdown of yearly AI costs.

How We Chose These Cheapest Useful AI Tools
This list of the cheapest useful AI tools picks the lowest-priced plan for each job. The maker must document that the job works on that plan. We name the main limit beside each pick.
Price is not the only cost. Some free plans show ads, most train on your chats by default, and DeepSeek stores data in China. The catches section below matters as much as the prices.
Free Options That Do Real Work
Research. Perplexity Free offers unlimited basic searches with citations and three Pro Searches a day. Gemini’s free plan includes Deep Research, and ChatGPT Free includes a capped amount. Before entering a card, our guide to AI free trials worth using covers no-card trials and refunds.
Coding. ChatGPT Free includes limited trial access to Codex. Google’s Antigravity CLI, which replaced Gemini CLI for free and Google AI accounts on June 18, 2026, is free with a smaller quota, several guides report. Our list of the best AI for beginners in coding covers learning modes too.
Long documents. Claude Free offers context of up to 1M tokens, depending on the model. Its five-hour session cap, though, limits how much you can do in a day. Gemini Notebook’s free plan holds 50 sources per notebook, each up to 500,000 words. Our list of the best AI for summarization covers it.
Email. In the US, Gemini’s Help me write works inside Gmail on a free personal account. Elsewhere it needs Google AI Plus, as our list of the best AI for email writing explains.
The Cheapest Paid Steps
Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, doubles Gemini’s free limits, raises context to 128K and adds 400 GB of storage. ChatGPT Go, at $8 in the US, adds more messages and longer memory but may still show ads.
Microsoft 365 Personal, at $9.99, adds Copilot inside Word and Outlook, the Office apps and 1 TB. Perplexity’s Education Pro costs $10 for verified students, and SuperGrok Lite is reported at $10.

When the $20 Plans Are Worth It
The standard plans add the stronger models. Those are Opus 5.5 on Claude Pro, GPT-5.6 Sol on ChatGPT Plus and 3.8 Flash on Google AI Pro. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro drop to $200 a year on yearly billing, about $17 a month. ChatGPT Plus and Google AI Pro bill monthly only.
Pay at this level only when a cheaper plan’s limits or model actually slow you down. Our free vs paid comparison covers what each free plan leaves out.
For Developers: The Cheapest Tokens
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output off-peak, with open weights. Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 and $3.75 through December 31, 2026. Google’s API also has a free tier, though Google may use its content to improve its products. Our list of the best AI tools for developers compares the APIs in full.
The Catches
ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans and Copilot’s free app show ads. Most consumer plans, free or paid, train on your chats by default until you opt out. Only business plans skip that by default. DeepSeek’s app is free but stores personal data in China, which rules it out for work in many places.

How We Research
This page collects plan details from each company’s own pages, read on September 30 and October 1, 2026. The Gemini CLI change comes from guides citing Google’s announcement. Gemini Notebook limits come from Google’s help pages as summarized by AI Weekly.
We take no payment for placement. Our criteria live on our about page.
