Best Claude Alternatives (2026): Pick by the Reason You’re Leaving

Disclosure: LabFin is reader-supported. If you sign up for a tool through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions vary between providers and our ratings do not — here’s our full disclosure.

Of the tools on this list, the best Claude alternatives are ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, in that order on our scores. Microsoft Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek follow. Each entry below names what the alternative does better than Claude and what you give up.

Claude itself scores 3.6 in our review, level with ChatGPT. Switching makes sense when one of Claude’s weak spots matters to you. Those include usage caps without published numbers, Fable models that cost extra on Pro and no plan below Pro. Its documented Gmail support is for reading mail in Research, not writing inside the inbox.

Best Claude Alternatives: The Short Answer

Among the best Claude alternatives on this list, ChatGPT is the closest match. It costs the same $20 a month on Plus, adds an $8 Go tier, and scores higher on the ARC-AGI reasoning tests. You give up Claude’s yearly billing, its ad-free free plan and its first place on Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, 2026. Our Claude vs Sudowrite comparison also covers the Story Bible and data terms.

For a specific reason, pick a specialist. Gemini starts at $4.99 with storage and writes inside Gmail, Perplexity cites every answer, and Copilot brings Claude and OpenAI models into Office. DeepSeek is free, but it stores your data in China.

How We Ordered These Claude Alternatives

This list of the best Claude alternatives follows our review scores, highest first. Ties follow the rule from our list of the best AI tools: the lower paid entry price goes first. It mirrors our list of ChatGPT alternatives, with Claude taken out and ChatGPT added.

1. ChatGPT: The Closest Match

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, the same as Claude Pro, and ChatGPT Go costs $8 in the US. On ARC Prize’s tests, GPT-6 Astra scored 95.0% on ARC-AGI-2 against 93.3% for Opus 5.5. It also scored 62.71% on ARC-AGI-3, where Opus 5.5 has no score yet. ChatGPT also adds Codex on every plan and a Gmail connector that sends after you approve.

What you give up: ChatGPT Plus is monthly only, and its Free and Go plans show ads. On Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, OpenAI’s best entry placed 14th against Opus 5.5’s first. Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers the details.

2. Gemini: Cheapest Paid Entry, Inside Gmail

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage and writes inside Gmail with Help me write. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 with 5 TB and a 1M-token context window.

What you give up: Artificial Analysis gives Gemini 3.8 Flash 41 against 58 for Claude Opus 5.5. An EBU and BBC study also found significant issues in 76% of Gemini’s news answers. Details are in our Gemini review.

3. Perplexity: Sourced Answers, Claude Models Included

Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, cites every answer and shows no ads. Its Help Center lists Claude Sonnet 5 among the Pro models, so you can keep using a Claude model inside Perplexity. Our Claude vs Poe comparison also weighs Anthropic’s own app against many models paid in points.

What you give up: Claude Opus 5 is on Perplexity Max only, and Perplexity has no drafting editor documented. Details are in our Perplexity review.

4. Microsoft Copilot: Claude Models Inside Office

Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month with Copilot in Word, Excel and Outlook and 1 TB of storage. In September 2026, Microsoft announced Claude Opus 5.5 for its Office apps alongside GPT-6 Sol, WindowsForum reported.

What you give up: the free app shows ads, the updated app’s training rules are unclear, and Researcher needs Microsoft 365 Premium. Details are in our Microsoft Copilot review.

5. Grok: Fewer Invented Answers

Artificial Analysis measured Grok 4.7 at a 29% hallucination rate on its knowledge test. A 59% rate reported for Opus 5.5 comes from a third-party reading we could not confirm. On the overall knowledge index, Opus 5.5’s 46 beats Grok’s 32.

What you give up: SuperGrok is reported at $30 a month, and its pricing may change. Its January 2026 image scandal also led to blocks in two countries. Details are in our Grok review.

6. DeepSeek: Free, With Data in China

The DeepSeek app is free, the API starts at $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak, and the V4.1 Flash weights are open. What you give up: DeepSeek stores your data in China. On Artificial Analysis’s test, its model also almost never declined a question it could not answer. Details are in our DeepSeek review.

Which Alternative for Which Reason

The best Claude alternatives on this list map to the reason you are leaving. Cheaper entry: Gemini at $4.99, ChatGPT Go at $8, or DeepSeek for free. Reasoning puzzles: ChatGPT, with higher ARC-AGI scores. Sourced research: Perplexity. Office work: Microsoft Copilot. Writing email inside Gmail: Gemini, as our list of the best AI for email writing explains. Fewer invented answers: Grok, on Artificial Analysis’s measure.

Usage caps are no reason to switch by themselves. No standard paid plan on this list publishes a message count, and ChatGPT Plus, Gemini and Perplexity Pro all use unpublished or relative limits. For yearly costs, see our breakdown of what AI tools cost.
