Perplexity vs Microsoft Copilot pits a search assistant against an office assistant. For example, Perplexity cites every answer and shows no ads. Microsoft Copilot, by contrast, works inside Word, Excel and Outlook from $9.99 a month. On sourcing, moreover, the two are closer than most rivals, although Perplexity still leads.
This page covers Microsoft Copilot, the assistant in Microsoft 365, not GitHub Copilot. Our reviews score Perplexity 3.4 and Microsoft Copilot 3.3, so the way you work matters more than the gap.
Perplexity vs Microsoft Copilot: The Short Answer
Choose Perplexity for research and fact-checking; choose Microsoft Copilot for work inside Office. Perplexity, for one, cites every answer on every plan, including the free one. Copilot, by contrast, puts AI inside the Office apps on Microsoft 365 Personal, which also includes 1 TB of storage.
On sourcing, Perplexity leads narrowly. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of Perplexity’s news answers had a significant issue. For Copilot, however, the figure was 37%. Still, both had sourcing problems in 15% of answers, the lowest share of the assistants tested.

Prices and Plans
At the standard level, however, the two cost almost the same. For instance, Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Microsoft 365 Premium $19.99 or $199.99. In other words, both offer yearly billing.
Lower down, however, they differ more. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month with Copilot in the Office apps and also includes 1 TB of storage. Perplexity’s cheapest paid plan, Education Pro at $10, is for verified students and educators only, though.
Research and Sources
Perplexity is built around citations. Every answer links to its sources. In addition, the free plan includes practically unlimited basic searches and one Research query a month, as our guide to Perplexity for research covers.
Copilot’s cited research needs Premium. Microsoft retired Deep Research in the consumer Copilot app on August 18, 2026. Its successor, Researcher, returns cited reports, but it needs Microsoft 365 Premium or Pro.
The Tow Center study of March 2025 also tested Copilot. There, Perplexity had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools. Our list of the best AI for research ranks the field on both studies.
Office, Email and Everyday Work
Copilot works where Office users already are. It drafts in Word, analyzes in Excel and writes replies in Outlook. Our guide to Microsoft Copilot for productivity covers each. Microsoft also announced Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol for its Office apps in September, WindowsForum reported.
Perplexity, by contrast, does not write inside your documents on Pro. Its Email Assistant works with Gmail and Outlook, but only on Max at $200 a month. Our list of the best AI for email writing compares the inbox options.
Ads, Training and Data
Perplexity shows no ads; Copilot’s free app does. Microsoft’s privacy controls page also says personalized ads in the app can draw on chat history and memories.
On training, however, each has a catch. Microsoft says it does not train on Copilot use inside the Microsoft 365 apps on Personal and Family. But the updated app lists no training switch. Perplexity, meanwhile, trains on searches by default, and its opt-out covers only data collected after you switch it off.

Where Each One Is Weakest
Perplexity is weakest inside your daily apps. It does not work in Word or Outlook on Pro, and its flagship models also sit on Max.
Copilot, by contrast, is weakest on research and clarity. Cited research needs Premium, and the free app shows ads. Also, the updated app’s training rules are unclear.
