Of the tools on this list, the best Grok alternatives are ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, in that order on our scores. Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and DeepSeek follow. Each entry below, moreover, names what the alternative does better than Grok and what you give up.

Grok scores 3.3 in our Grok review. Its strengths are live posts from X and a low hallucination rate on Artificial Analysis’s knowledge test. Its weak spots, however, include its January 2026 image scandal, prices known only from third-party readings, and training on your chats by default.

Best Grok Alternatives: The Short Answer

How We Ordered These Grok Alternatives

This list of the best Grok alternatives follows our review scores, highest first. Ties follow the rule from our list of the best AI tools: the lower paid entry price goes first.

So ChatGPT, with Go at $8, sits above Claude, whose cheapest plan is Pro at about $17 on yearly billing. Likewise, Gemini at $4.99 sits above Perplexity at $20. The list mirrors our list of Perplexity alternatives, with Grok taken out and Perplexity added.

Why People Leave Grok

First, Grok’s image tool caused a scandal in January 2026 that led to blocks in two countries. Second, SpaceXAI’s consumer prices come mostly from third-party readings, so plans are harder to compare.

Third, Grok trains on your chats unless you turn off Improve the model, as our guide to which AI tools train on your data shows. On the other hand, it measured a 29% hallucination rate on Artificial Analysis’s knowledge test, lower than most rivals, so leaving has a real cost.

Why people leave Grok and what they give up: live X posts and a low hallucination rate

1. ChatGPT: The Broadest Replacement

First, ChatGPT Go costs $8 in the US and Plus $20. GPT-6 Astra scores 53 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index, and ChatGPT adds deep research, image generation, Codex and add-ins for Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

What you give up, though: Grok’s low hallucination rate, which few rivals match on that test. Free and Go also show ads in test regions. Our ChatGPT vs Grok comparison covers the details.

2. Claude: Stronger Scores, No Ads

Claude Pro, by contrast, costs $20 a month or $200 a year and shows no ads. Its Opus 5.5 scores 58 on the Intelligence Index, and Claude Code scored 68 on the Coding Agent Index, against 56 for Grok Build.

What you give up, however: Claude has no plan below Pro and no live X feed. Our Claude vs Grok comparison goes deeper.

Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year; no ads

3. Gemini: The Cheapest Way In

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, and Google AI Pro, at $19.99, adds a 1M-token context, 5 TB of storage and work inside Gmail and Docs. Deep Research, moreover, is available on the free plan.

What you give up, though: Gemini had significant issues in 76% of news answers in the EBU and BBC study, and its index score trails. Our Gemini vs Grok comparison weighs both.

4. Perplexity: Cited Research

Perplexity Pro, meanwhile, costs $20 a month or $200 a year, cites every answer and shows no ads. In the EBU and BBC study, it had the fewest significant issues of the four assistants tested, at 30%.

What you give up, however: its $20 plan does not include its top models, and it lacks Grok’s X feed. Our Perplexity vs Grok comparison covers both.

5. Microsoft Copilot: For Office

Microsoft 365 Personal, for its part, costs $9.99 a month and brings Copilot into Word, Excel and Outlook with 1 TB of storage. As a result, it suits people who work in Office more than on X.

What you give up, though: the free app shows ads, and we could not confirm the training rule for Microsoft’s updated app. Our Grok vs Microsoft Copilot comparison covers both.

6. DeepSeek: Free, With Data in China

Finally, the DeepSeek app is free, and its open weights can run on your own hardware. Its API, in addition, starts at $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak.

What you give up, however: the hosted app stores your data in China, as our DeepSeek review explains. Our Grok vs DeepSeek comparison explains the trade-off.

If You Mainly Code With Grok

Grok models also run inside Cursor, which SpaceXAI now owns, as our guide to who owns which AI tool explains, and in GitHub Copilot’s paid plans. So you can keep Grok’s models while changing tools, as our Grok vs Cursor comparison explains.

Which Alternative for Which Reason

If safety or price clarity is your reason for leaving, take Claude or ChatGPT. For the lowest price, by contrast, take Gemini, and for sourced research, Perplexity.

If you value Grok’s live X posts and lower hallucination rate, though, consider staying and turning off training. Our list of ChatGPT alternatives follows the same rule as this one.

We run no tests of our own, and our about page explains the criteria.
