Gemini vs Microsoft Copilot is mostly a choice between Google’s apps and Microsoft’s. For example, Gemini starts at $4.99 a month and works inside Gmail and Google Docs. Microsoft Copilot, by contrast, comes with Microsoft 365 from $9.99 a month and works inside Word, Excel and Outlook. Our page on DeepSeek vs Microsoft Copilot covers a free open-weight model against AI inside Office.
This page covers Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft’s assistant for consumers and Office, not GitHub Copilot. Our reviews score Gemini 3.4 and Microsoft Copilot 3.3, so the apps you already use matter more than the score.
Gemini vs Microsoft Copilot: The Short Answer

Prices and Plans
At the entry level, Gemini starts cheaper. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB. Google AI Pro then costs $19.99 with 5 TB and a 1M-token context. However, every Google AI plan bills monthly, so a year of Google AI Pro costs $239.88. Both free plans, meanwhile, are compared in our free vs paid comparison.
Microsoft 365 Personal, however, costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with the Office apps and 1 TB. Premium costs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. On Family, however, only the subscription owner gets the AI features. Our yearly cost breakdown compares both over a year.
Apps, Email and Research
Each works best inside its own suite. Gemini writes in Gmail with Help me write and works in Google Docs. Copilot, meanwhile, works inside Word, Excel and Outlook. Our list of the best AI for email writing covers both inboxes.
For research, Gemini gives more for free. Its Deep Research, for example, works on the free plan and exports to Google Docs. Microsoft, however, retired Deep Research in the consumer Copilot app on August 18, 2026. Its successor, Researcher, needs Microsoft 365 Premium.
On models, Copilot borrows from others. For instance, Microsoft announced Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol for its Office apps in September, WindowsForum reported. Gemini, in contrast, runs Google’s own models, and Google also announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026.
What the Independent Evidence Shows
On news accuracy, Copilot leads by a wide margin. The EBU and BBC found significant issues in 37% of Copilot’s news answers, while Gemini’s figure was 76%. Still, both tests used free versions in 2025, as our list of the best AI for research covers.
Model boards, on the other hand, are harder to compare, because Copilot runs other companies’ models. For example, Gemini 3.8 Flash placed 11th on Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026, marked preliminary. Copilot, however, has no entry of its own on that board, since it borrows models.
Ads, Training and Data
Copilot’s free app shows ads; Google says it does not use Gemini chats for ads. Microsoft’s privacy controls page says personalized ads in the Copilot app can draw on chat history and memories.
On training, however, each has a catch. Gemini’s training follows Keep Activity. With it on, some chats may go to human reviewers for up to three years. Microsoft says it does not train on Copilot use inside the Microsoft 365 apps on Personal and Family. But the updated Copilot app lists no training switch.

Where Each One Is Weakest
Gemini is weakest on accuracy and billing. Its news-accuracy result is the worst of the assistants tested, and every Google AI plan also bills monthly. In addition, keeping Gmail and Drive in Gemini means leaving training on.
Copilot is weakest on research and data clarity. Cited research needs Premium, and the free app shows ads. Also, the updated app’s training rules are unclear.
Winners by Category
Price: Gemini, because Google AI Plus costs $4.99, although Copilot includes the Office apps for $9.99. Yearly billing: Microsoft Copilot, since Premium costs $199.99 a year. Free research: Gemini, because Deep Research works on the free plan. News accuracy: Microsoft Copilot, at 37% against 76%. Ads and storage: Gemini, since Copilot’s free app shows ads and Google AI Pro includes 5 TB. Your apps and training rules: a split, because each suite has its own catch.
When to Choose Microsoft Copilot Instead
Take Microsoft Copilot if you already pay for Microsoft 365, or if you work in Word, Excel and Outlook all day. Also turn off ad personalization if you use the free app, since its ads can draw on your chats.
