How AI pricing has changed in 2026 comes down to four clear shifts across the tools we review. Free plans, for example, shrank or disappeared, credits replaced flat limits, entry plans got cheaper, and team plans added minimums.
This guide lists the changes we verified while reviewing each tool, then sets out what they mean for what you pay. Each change links to the review where we checked it.
How AI Pricing Has Changed: The Short Answer
First, several free plans shrank: Poe cut daily free points, and Scite and Copy.ai dropped free plans. Second, usage now runs on credits in more tools, including GitHub Copilot since June 1, 2026.
At the same time, however, cheaper entry plans arrived, such as ChatGPT Go at $8 in the US and Google AI Plus at $4.99. Our comparison of AI plans and prices lists current plans.
Free Plans Shrank
Poe cut its free allowance from 3,000 to 300 points a day on March 30, 2026, as our Poe review covers. Scite, moreover, dropped its free plan in July 2026.
Copy.ai also ended its free plan for new users, as our Copy.ai review explains. Otter, in addition, cut Pro from 6,000 to 1,200 minutes a month without lowering the price.

Credits Replaced Flat Limits
GitHub Copilot, for example, began metering chat, agents and the CLI with AI credits on June 1, 2026, while completions stay unlimited. Our GitHub Copilot review covers the details.
Replit, similarly, bills Agent work by effort, and Ollama’s cloud moved to a credit model in 2026. App builders such as Lovable and Bolt.new, moreover, sell credits or tokens rather than flat plans.
Entry Plans Got Cheaper
ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US, and Google AI Plus costs $4.99. Google’s top tier, Ultra, also costs $199.99 at its highest level, against $249.99 at its 2025 launch, as our Gemini pricing guide covers.
LM Studio, meanwhile, became free for work use in July 2025, as our LM Studio review notes.

Plans Merged and Moved
Grammarly folded Premium and Business into Pro, and its team tier now sits in the Superhuman suite. Replit, for its part, replaced Teams with Pro on February 20, 2026.
v0, moreover, closed its $20 Premium plan to new users, so paid use now starts on Team at $30 a user. Our v0 review and Grammarly review cover both.
Ads and Ownership
ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans may show ads in test regions, while Plus and above stay ad-free. Ownership, in addition, shifted: Fullcast bought Copy.ai, Superhuman bought Fathom, and SpaceX acquired Cursor’s maker.

What to Do About It
Given how AI pricing has changed, recheck plans every quarter, since prices and limits move. Pay yearly only for tools you use daily, and watch credit use on agents and app builders.

How We Research
This guide on how AI pricing has changed draws on the pricing checks behind our reviews, read between July and October 4, 2026. One example source is GitHub’s Copilot plans page.
We list only changes we verified for tools we review. Our about page explains how we research, and our breakdown of AI tool costs covers yearly totals.

The Verdict
AI pricing in 2026 moved toward cheaper entry plans and metered usage, while free plans shrank. The headline price, however, matters less than limits and credits.
So recheck each quarter and pay for the plan your actual use needs. That is how AI pricing has changed, and how to keep up.
