Of the tools on this list, the best DeepSeek alternatives are ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, in that order on our scores. Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Grok follow. Each entry below, moreover, names what the alternative does better than DeepSeek and what you give up.

DeepSeek scores 3.0 in our DeepSeek review. Its strengths are a free app, open weights you can run yourself and some of the cheapest API tokens. Its main weakness, however, is that its hosted app and API store your data in China.

Best DeepSeek Alternatives: The Short Answer

Among the best DeepSeek alternatives on this list, ChatGPT is the broadest replacement, and its free plan covers everyday chats. Claude, meanwhile, leads on independent scores, writing and coding, with no ads on any plan.

Every alternative here, moreover, is run by a US company, as our guide to who owns which AI tool shows, and each has a free plan. None, however, offers open weights, so self-hosting still means DeepSeek’s models or another open model.

How We Ordered These DeepSeek Alternatives

This list of the best DeepSeek alternatives follows our review scores, highest first. Ties follow the rule from our list of the best AI tools: the lower paid entry price goes first.

So ChatGPT, with Go at $8, sits above Claude, whose cheapest plan is Pro at about $17 on yearly billing. Likewise, Gemini at $4.99 sits above Perplexity at $20, and Microsoft Copilot at $9.99 above Grok’s reported $10. Our list of Microsoft Copilot alternatives also ranks six options, including ChatGPT inside Word and Excel.

Why People Leave DeepSeek

First, DeepSeek’s hosted app and API store data in China for as long as the account exists, and its privacy policy allows sharing with authorities under legal process. Second, DeepSeek has no coding agent or deep research tool of its own.

On the other hand, leaving has a cost. The app is free, the open weights send nothing to DeepSeek when you host them, and its API starts at $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak.

Why people leave DeepSeek and what they give up: free use, open weights and cheap API tokens

1. ChatGPT: The Broadest Replacement

ChatGPT Free offers unlimited everyday chats, and Go costs $8 in the US. GPT-6 Astra, moreover, scores 53 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index, and ChatGPT adds deep research, image generation, Codex and Office add-ins.

What you give up, though: ChatGPT is not free beyond its capped plan, and Free and Go show ads in test regions. Our ChatGPT vs DeepSeek comparison covers the details.

2. Claude: Stronger Scores, No Ads

Claude Free, by contrast, shows no ads, and Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year. Its Opus 5.5 scores 58 on the Intelligence Index, and Claude Code scored 68 on the Coding Agent Index, against 43.1 for DeepSeek V4 Pro run inside Codex.

What you give up, however: Claude’s API costs far more per token, and it has no open weights. Our Claude vs DeepSeek comparison goes deeper.

Claude Free shows no ads; Pro is $20 a month

3. Gemini: Cheap and Inside Google’s Apps

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, and Gemini Free includes Deep Research. Google AI Pro, at $19.99, also adds a 1M-token context and work inside Gmail and Docs.

What you give up, though: Gemini had significant issues in 76% of news answers in the EBU and BBC study. Our Gemini vs DeepSeek comparison weighs both.

4. Perplexity: Cited Research

Perplexity, for its part, cites every answer, shows no ads, and had the fewest significant issues in the EBU and BBC study, at 30%. Pro, meanwhile, costs $20 a month or $200 a year.

What you give up, however: Perplexity trains on Free and Pro chats by default, and its top models sit on Max. Our Perplexity vs DeepSeek comparison covers both.

5. Microsoft Copilot: For Office

Microsoft 365 Personal, meanwhile, costs $9.99 a month and brings Copilot into Word, Excel and Outlook with 1 TB of storage. As a result, it suits people who work in Office documents.

What you give up, though: the free app shows ads, and we could not confirm the training rule for Microsoft’s updated app. Our DeepSeek vs Microsoft Copilot comparison covers both.

6. Grok: Live Posts

Finally, Grok draws on real-time X posts, and Artificial Analysis measured Grok 4.7 at a 29% hallucination rate on its knowledge test. SuperGrok Lite, in addition, is reported at $10 a month.

What you give up, however: Grok’s January 2026 image scandal led to blocks in two countries, and its prices come from third-party readings. Our Grok vs DeepSeek comparison explains the trade-off.

If You Use DeepSeek for Coding

DeepSeek’s API also plugs into Codex, where V4 Pro scored 43.1 on BenchLM’s mirror of the agent index. If cost is your main reason, you can keep the model and change the agent, as our guide to DeepSeek for coding explains.

Cursor, by contrast, does not list DeepSeek’s models, as our DeepSeek vs Cursor comparison notes.

Which Alternative for Which Reason

If data location is your reason for leaving, any alternative here is run by a US company; therefore, pick by features. For breadth, take ChatGPT; for writing and coding, Claude; and for the lowest paid price, Gemini.

If cost or open weights matter most, though, consider staying and self-hosting. Our guide to which AI tools train on your data compares the alternatives’ defaults.
