Perplexity vs Grok pits two kinds of real-time answers against each other. For example, Perplexity searches the web and cites every answer, while Grok reads posts on X as they appear. Their sourcing records, however, are far apart. For more, our page on Perplexity vs DeepSeek covers cited search against a free open-weight model that stores data in China.

In the Tow Center’s citation study of March 2025, Perplexity answered 37% of queries wrong, the lowest of eight tools. Grok 3, by contrast, answered 94% wrong, the highest. However, that study predates Grok 4.7, so this page also covers newer evidence. Our reviews score Perplexity 3.4 and Grok 3.3.

Perplexity vs Grok: The Short Answer

Choose Perplexity for research you need to trust; choose Grok for what people are saying on X right now. Perplexity costs $20 a month or $200 a year on Pro, and it also shows no ads. SuperGrok, by contrast, is reported at $30 a month, and Grok’s pricing may change, Bloomberg reported.

On model scores, Grok has the numbers. Grok 4.7 scores 46 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index and has a 29% hallucination rate there. Perplexity, meanwhile, has no model of its own on that index, because Pro runs a menu of other companies’ models.

Prices and Plans

Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Education Pro costs $10 a month for verified students. Max, at the top, then costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year.

SuperGrok costs $30 a month, according to an AllAble reading of x.ai/pricing on September 22, 2026. Guides also list SuperGrok Lite at $10, while X Premium+ at $40 a month includes SuperGrok access. However, Bloomberg reported on September 30 that SpaceXAI is weighing a single Grok and X subscription, so check before paying.

What the Independent Evidence Shows

On citations, Perplexity’s record is far stronger. In the Tow Center study, Grok 3 answered 94% of queries wrong. In addition, 154 of its 200 citations led to error pages. Perplexity, by contrast, had the lowest error rate of the eight tools, at 37%.

Perplexity also did best in the EBU and BBC study of October 2025. There, 30% of its news answers had a significant issue. Grok, however, was not part of that study, as our list of the best AI for research notes.

⚠️ Grok’s evidence is older than its model. The Tow Center tested Grok 3. Grok 4.7, meanwhile, now scores 46 on Artificial Analysis’s index with a 29% hallucination rate. On Arena’s Search board of August 24, 2026, grok-4.5 also placed eighth. Perplexity’s two Sonar entries placed 29th and 31st, but they were API models that Perplexity retired on September 27.

Ads, Training and Safety

Perplexity shows no ads; Grok’s are announced. Perplexity phased out ads in February 2026. Musk, in contrast, told advertisers in August 2025 that X would place ads in Grok’s answers. We could not confirm whether those have launched.

Both train on consumer chats by default. Still, Perplexity’s opt-out covers only data collected after you switch it off. SpaceXAI’s consumer FAQ, meanwhile, says authorized staff may review Grok conversations. It also says SpaceXAI deletes Private Chat within 30 days.

In January 2026, people used Grok’s image tool to create sexualized, nonconsensual edits of real people. As a result, Indonesia and Malaysia temporarily blocked Grok. Perplexity, for its part, faces publisher lawsuits, including from Dow Jones and The New York Times, over how it uses their content.

Crawlers and Your Site

For site owners, however, the two behave differently. PerplexityBot honors robots.txt, guides report, but Perplexity-User skips it by design, according to Perplexity’s documentation as cited by developers. At the time of the Tow Center study, xAI had not published its crawler names. Our list of the best AI for SEO covers crawler rules in more detail.

Where Each One Is Weakest

Perplexity is weakest on depth. Its $20 plan lacks the flagship models from OpenAI and Anthropic, and Research is limited on the free plan.

Grok, by contrast, is weakest on sourcing and its record. Its tested citation record is the worst of the eight tools. Also, its January image scandal led to blocks in two countries. Its plan pages also do not render fully for automated reading.

Winners by Category

Citation record: Perplexity, because Grok 3 answered 94% wrong against 37%. Model scores: Grok, since Perplexity has no model of its own on the index. Real-time content: a split, because Perplexity searches the web while Grok reads X. Price: Perplexity, at $20 against a reported $30, with yearly billing too. Ads: Perplexity, with none. Safety record: Perplexity, though it faces publisher lawsuits.

When to Choose Grok Instead

Take Grok if you follow news and opinion on X. It also makes sense if you already pay for X Premium+, which includes SuperGrok. Still, open every link it gives you, since its tested citation record is weak.

Take Perplexity for research, fact-checking and anything you will publish, as our guide to Perplexity for research covers. Its citations, after all, are the point.

Both scores come from the same five criteria, applied to each tool in its own review. We run no tests of our own, and our criteria live on our about page. For Perplexity against Google’s assistant, see our Gemini vs Perplexity comparison.
