Gemini for research offers more on its free plan than most rivals. Deep Research, which reads many sources and writes a cited report, works on the free plan with limits. Gemini Notebook also holds 50 sources per notebook for free. Reports also export to Google Docs in one step.

The accuracy record, however, is the weak point. In an EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 76% of Gemini’s news answers had a significant issue. That was the highest share among the assistants tested. This guide covers what each plan allows, what the evidence shows, and how to check Gemini’s reports.

Gemini for Research: The Short Answer

Gemini for research is the strongest free option if you check every source. For example, the free plan includes Deep Research and Gemini Notebook. Google AI Pro at $19.99 then raises Deep Research to 20 reports a day, 9to5Google reports. Eligible college students can get a year of Google AI Pro in the US, or AI Plus in 140 countries, at no cost. Our page on Gemini for students covers the free year of Google AI Pro and Gemini’s accuracy record.

Still, its sourcing record is the worst of the tested assistants. The EBU and BBC found significant sourcing problems in 72% of Gemini’s news answers. If citations matter most, Perplexity had the lower error rates in both news studies, as our Perplexity review covers.

Deep Research and Gemini Notebook

First, Deep Research writes reports. Google’s Help Center says it uses Google Search by default. You can add your Gmail or Drive as sources, or deselect Search to research only your own files. Finished reports then export to Google Docs and can become an Audio Overview.

In addition, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can generate reports with the stronger Pro model and get higher limits, the Help Center says. On Ultra, reports may also include charts, diagrams and interactive simulations. Our Gemini pricing guide lists each plan.

Second, Gemini Notebook answers from your sources. It answers from the documents you add and also cites the passages it used. The free plan allows 50 sources per notebook and Google AI Pro 300, as our list of the best AI for summarization covers.

What the Independent Evidence Shows

On news accuracy, Gemini trails the field. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, which tested free versions, significant issues appeared in 76% of Gemini’s news answers. In contrast, the figures for the other assistants were 30% for Perplexity, 36% for ChatGPT and 37% for Copilot. Our guide to why AI gets facts wrong explains the common causes.

On knowledge tests, it scores lower too. Artificial Analysis gives Gemini 3.8 Flash 30 on its AA-Omniscience index and Gemini 3.1 Pro 32. GPT-6 Astra scores 44 and Claude Opus 5.5 46, as our Claude vs Gemini comparison covers. On Arena’s Search board of August 24, 2026, gemini-3.1-pro-grounding placed ninth.

⚠️ The evidence predates Google’s newest models. For one thing, the EBU and BBC study tested older free versions. Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, and no independent board has tested it on research yet.

How to Check a Gemini Research Report

First, open every cited page and confirm that it exists and says what the report claims. Also deselect Google Search when you want answers only from your own files. Then add trusted documents to Gemini Notebook so answers point to exact passages, as our NotebookLM review explains.

For anything you publish, however, quote the original source rather than the report. Compare key findings with a second tool when the stakes are high. Our guide to fact-checking AI output covers the routine.

Your Research Data

Gemini’s training follows Keep Activity. With it on, Google may train on your chats and send some to human reviewers, who can keep them for up to three years. Using Gmail and Drive as Deep Research sources requires the Google Workspace app connected to Gemini, which in turn needs Keep Activity on.

So turn Keep Activity off for confidential topics, even though Gmail and Drive sources then stop working. Google AI plans are for users 18 and older, Google’s plan page says.

Where Gemini Runs Short for Research

Above all, accuracy is the main gap. Gemini had the highest share of flawed news answers in the EBU and BBC study and scores lowest on Artificial Analysis’s knowledge index among the leading models. Connecting your own mail and files also means leaving training on. Our list of Gemini alternatives ranks options with stronger records, and our Gemini vs Perplexity comparison weighs the two for research.

Who Should Use Gemini for Research, and What to Use Instead

Gemini suits researchers who want free reports, Google Docs export and long source lists. Students get the most, with a free year of Google AI Pro in the US, Google’s update page says.

Others, however, fit higher-stakes work. For example, Perplexity has the stronger tested sourcing record. ChatGPT’s deep research exports to Word and PDF, as our guide to ChatGPT for research explains. Claude’s model scores higher on knowledge tests, as our guide to Claude for research covers.

How We Research

This guide draws on Google’s Deep Research help article, its plan page and its Gemini update page, read on October 1, 2026. Accuracy figures come from the EBU and BBC, Artificial Analysis and Arena, each dated where used.

We also run no research tests of our own. Plan details come from our Gemini review, and our criteria live on our about page.
