Claude vs DeepSeek is a lopsided match on the independent boards. Claude’s Opus 5.5 scores 58 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index against 39 for DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and leads every board here. DeepSeek’s app is free, its newest model is open-weight, and its privacy policy says it stores personal data in China.
Our reviews score Claude 3.6 and DeepSeek 3.0. The sections below compare price, models, accuracy, data and who each one suits.
Claude vs DeepSeek: The Short Answer

The accuracy gap is large. On Artificial Analysis’s knowledge index, Opus 5.5 scores 46 and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash minus 5.3. V4.1 Flash declined only 4% of the questions it could not answer.

Price and Plans
DeepSeek’s consumer app on the web, iOS and Android is free, and there is no paid consumer tier. Paid use goes through its API, priced from $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens off-peak for V4.1 Flash.
Claude Free costs nothing, Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Max costs $100 or $200 a month. Free runs Sonnet and Haiku models, while Pro adds Opus 5.5, Research and Claude Code.
What the Independent Boards Show
Claude leads on every board here. Artificial Analysis gives Opus 5.5 58 on its Intelligence Index and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 39. Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026 had claude-opus-5.5-high fourth, deepseek-v4.1-flash-max 40th and DeepSeek’s V4 Pro 54th.
For coding, Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scores 68 on Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index. DeepSeek V4 Pro running inside Codex scored 43.1, according to BenchLM’s mirror of the index, as our list of the best AI for coding covers.
On admitting unknowns, the gap is widest. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash’s non-hallucination rate was 4%, and its AA-Omniscience index minus 5.3, against 46 for Opus 5.5. A 59% hallucination rate reported for Opus 5.5 comes from a third-party reading we could not confirm, but even that would sit well below DeepSeek’s 96%.
Where Your Data Goes
DeepSeek stores your data in China. Its privacy policy, updated on February 10, 2026, says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China. It keeps chat data as long as the account exists and allows sharing with authorities to comply with legal requests.
Both train on consumer chats by default and both offer an opt-out. With Claude’s Help improve Claude on, Anthropic keeps chats for five years, and its Incognito chats stay out of training. DeepSeek’s opt-out is a setting called Improve the model for everyone.
⚠️ Several governments restrict DeepSeek. Italy blocked the app in January 2025, Australia banned it from government devices, and the Czech Republic barred its public administration, Reuters reported. Check your employer’s policy before using it for work.

Self-Hosting and the API
DeepSeek’s open weights let developers run V4.1 Flash on their own servers, which keeps prompts away from DeepSeek. Its API news page says V4 Pro is available in the app through Expert Mode, and that its API offers one-click setup for Codex.
Claude’s models run through Anthropic’s own apps and API. On Team and Enterprise plans and through the API, Anthropic does not train on your data by default, as our guide to Claude for coding explains.
Where Each One Is Weakest
Claude is weakest on price. Its stronger models need Pro at $20 a month, it publishes no message counts, and with training on it keeps chats five years. Claude Code is not on the free plan.
DeepSeek is weakest on data and accuracy. Your chats are stored in China, several governments restrict the app, and its model guesses on almost every question it cannot answer.
