Claude for research works in two modes. Web search, on every plan, adds cited sources to ordinary answers. Research, on paid plans, runs many searches in a row, can read your Gmail and Google Docs when connected, and returns a longer cited answer.
The independent evidence is thinner than for its rivals. Neither the EBU and BBC news study nor the Tow Center citation study included Claude. So there is no direct test of how often its research answers go wrong. This guide covers what each plan allows, what the evidence does show, and how to check the results.
Claude for Research: The Short Answer
Claude for research is worth paying for on Pro if your sources include your own mail and documents. Research comes with Pro at $20 a month or $200 a year and reads Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs when you connect them. Free gets web search with citations but not Research.
Check every citation, as with any tool. On Artificial Analysis’s knowledge index, Opus 5.5 scores 46, slightly ahead of GPT-6 Astra’s 44. No news-accuracy study has tested Claude, so its sourcing record is unknown rather than proven.
Web Search and Research
Web search answers quick questions with sources. Anthropic’s web search announcement says Claude provides direct citations when it uses web results, and that search is available on all plans.
Research goes deeper. Anthropic’s Help Center says Research runs multiple searches that build on each other and delivers answers with easy-to-check citations. It needs web search turned on and works on the web, desktop and mobile apps for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
Research can also search your connected Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Anthropic’s integrations announcement says advanced Research can run for up to 45 minutes and links its citations to the original material.

| Plan | Price (US) | Research features |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Web search with citations; up to 5 projects; no Research |
| Pro | $20/mo or $200/yr | Research; Gmail, Calendar and Docs when connected |
| Max, lower tier | $100/mo | Research with higher limits |
| Max, top tier | $200/mo | Highest individual limits |
| Team Standard | $25/seat/mo, or $20 yearly | Research; no training on your data by default |
What the Independent Evidence Shows
On general knowledge, Claude scores well. Artificial Analysis gives Opus 5.5 46 on its AA-Omniscience index, which rewards correct answers and penalizes invented ones, against 44 for GPT-6 Astra. On Arena’s Search board of August 24, 2026, claude-opus-4-6-search placed second at 1253, behind OpenAI’s entry at 1257.
⚠️ On sourcing, there is no direct test. The EBU and BBC study of October 2025 and the Tow Center study of March 2025 tested ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others, but not Claude. A 59% hallucination rate reported for Opus 5.5 comes from a third-party reading that we could not confirm on Artificial Analysis’s own pages.

How to Check a Claude Research Answer
Open each citation and confirm that the page exists and says what Claude claims. Connect only the sources a question needs, since Research reads everything you give it access to. For anything you publish, quote the original source rather than Claude’s summary. Our Claude vs Elicit comparison also weighs price and data terms.
For long documents, Claude can take in up to 1M tokens, depending on the model. Even so, ask for the passage behind each key point. The sources behind our reviews do not document citations back to specific places in uploaded files, as our list of the best AI for summarization notes.
Your Research Data
On Free, Pro and Max, Claude trains on chats by default until you turn off Help improve Claude. With training on, Anthropic keeps chats for five years; with it off, for 30 days. Its retention page adds that Anthropic does not use Incognito chats for training, even with the setting on.
Team and Enterprise plans skip training by default, which matters for confidential research.
Where Claude Runs Short for Research
Research is paid-only, and Anthropic publishes no count of how many Research runs a plan allows. Usage comes from the same five-hour session pool as chat. The sourcing record is untested in the major studies, and file citations are not documented.
Who Should Use Claude for Research, and What to Use Instead
Claude suits researchers who mix the web with their own mail and documents. Research reads connected Gmail and Docs, and Claude handles long documents well.
Other tools fit other needs. Perplexity cites every answer and has the stronger tested sourcing record, as our Claude vs Perplexity comparison covers. ChatGPT’s deep research works on every plan and exports reports to Word or PDF, as our guide to ChatGPT for research explains.
Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison sets the two subscriptions side by side. For every other option, our list of Claude alternatives matches each tool to the reason for switching.

How We Research
This guide draws on Anthropic’s Research help article, its web search and integrations announcements and its retention page, read on October 1, 2026. Accuracy figures come from Artificial Analysis and Arena, each dated where used.
We run no research tests of our own. Plan details come from our Claude review, and our criteria live on our about page.
