Claude vs Perplexity is a choice between a writing and coding assistant and a search engine that cites every answer. Both cost $20 a month or $200 a year, and neither shows ads. Claude Pro includes Opus 5.5 and Claude Code. Perplexity Pro offers a menu of models, among them Anthropic’s Sonnet 5.
Our reviews score Claude 3.6 and Perplexity 3.4. The sections below compare prices, models, evidence, data and who each one suits.
Claude vs Perplexity: The Short Answer
Choose Claude for writing, long documents and coding; choose Perplexity for quick research with sources. Claude’s Opus 5.5 placed fourth on Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026, and Claude Code comes with Pro. Perplexity cites every answer and had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools in a Tow Center study of March 2025. That study did not include Anthropic’s assistant. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity comparison also covers sourcing studies and plans.
You can also have some of both. Perplexity’s Help Center lists Sonnet 5, an Anthropic model, among Pro models, so you can run it inside Perplexity’s search. Opus 5 sits on the Max plan only.

Prices and Plans
At the standard level, the two cost the same: $20 a month or $200 a year. Perplexity also offers Education Pro at $10 a month for verified students and educators. Anthropic has no plan below Pro.
At the top, Claude Max costs $100 or $200 a month, monthly only. Perplexity Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year. It adds flagship models, including Anthropic’s Opus 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol.
Models and What They Are Good At
Claude Pro gets Anthropic’s strongest released model. Opus 5.5 scored 58 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index and placed first on Arena’s creative-writing board of September 25, on 487 votes. Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 leads Artificial Analysis’s coding agent comparison, as our guide to Claude for coding covers.
Perplexity Pro offers a menu built around search. Its Help Center lists Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5 and Kimi K3 on Pro. Of those, kimi-k3-max placed 17th on Arena’s text board of September 30, against fourth for claude-opus-5.5-high.
What the Independent Evidence Shows
On search, the evidence points different ways. Arena’s Search board of August 24, 2026 had claude-opus-4-6-search second at 1253. The two Sonar entries placed 29th and 31st. Those Sonar models were API versions that Perplexity retired on September 27.
On sourcing, Perplexity has the stronger record, but Claude was not tested. In the Tow Center study of March 2025, Perplexity answered 37% of citation queries wrong, the lowest of eight tools. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 30% of its news answers had a significant issue. Neither study included Claude, so they offer no direct comparison.
Claude’s web search, on all plans, also cites its sources, Anthropic’s announcement says. Research on paid plans returns longer cited reports.
Ads, Training and Data
Neither shows ads. Anthropic pledged in February 2026 to keep Claude ad-free, and Perplexity phased out its ads the same month.
Both train on consumer chats by default. Claude’s opt-out is the Help improve Claude toggle, and with it on, Anthropic keeps chats for five years. Perplexity’s opt-out is the AI data retention toggle, which covers only data collected after you switch it off.

Limits and Extras
Neither publishes message counts for its standard plan. Claude runs on a five-hour session window plus a weekly cap, shared between chat and Claude Code. Perplexity Pro lists weekly limits for average use. Its Computer agent runs on credits, with only a one-time bonus of 4,000 on Pro.
Where Each One Is Weakest
Claude is weakest on search-first work and on limits. It searches when asked rather than by default, its limits come without numbers, and it has no plan below Pro. With training on, it keeps chats for five years.
Perplexity is weakest on models and depth. Its $20 plan lacks the flagship models from Anthropic and OpenAI, and it has no drafting editor documented. Agent tasks also cost extra credits on Pro.

How We Research
This comparison reuses the sources behind our Claude review and our Perplexity review, rechecked on October 1, 2026. Rankings come from Arena and Artificial Analysis, and sourcing studies from the Tow Center and the EBU and BBC, each dated where used.
Both scores come from the same five criteria, applied to each tool in its own review. We run no tests of our own. The criteria behind every score live on our about page, and our list of Claude alternatives covers other options.
