Gemini for students comes with a more generous student offer than ChatGPT or Claude. Google’s Gemini update page says eligible college students can get one year of Google AI Pro in the US at no cost. In more than 140 other countries, the free year covers Google AI Plus. Google AI Pro normally costs $19.99 a month.

The free plan already covers a lot: Deep Research, Gemini Notebook and a Guided Learning mode. The catch is accuracy, since Gemini had the weakest record of the assistants in a major news study. This guide covers what students get, the rules and how to check Gemini’s answers.

Gemini for Students: The Short Answer

Gemini for students is the best deal on paper if you are an eligible college student. A free year of Google AI Pro brings Gemini 3.8 Flash and 5 TB of storage. It also raises Deep Research to 20 reports a day, 9to5Google reports. The free plan also includes Deep Research and Gemini Notebook.

Check everything it tells you. In the EBU and BBC study of October 2025, 76% of Gemini’s news answers had a significant issue and 72% had sourcing problems. Google AI plans are also for users 18 and older, its plan page says.

What Gemini Offers Students

Guided Learning. Gemini’s Guided Learning breaks a topic into steps and asks questions as you go. It works on the free plan with usage limits, guides from Glasp and Wonder Tools report.

Deep Research and Gemini Notebook. Deep Research writes cited reports and exports them to Google Docs, Google’s Help Center says. Gemini Notebook answers from the sources you add, up to 50 per notebook on the free plan. Our list of the best AI for summarization covers it.

A student hub. Google’s August 2026 update added a dedicated student hub and study notebooks on mobile, alongside the free year of Pro. Coding students also get Google’s free Antigravity CLI, as our list of the best AI for beginners in coding covers.

What each Gemini plan offers students, including the free year of Google AI Pro

The Free Year of Google AI Pro

Google says eligible college students in the US can get one year of Google AI Pro at no cost. In more than 140 other countries, the offer covers Google AI Plus, and Google’s plan page repeats the free Pro year for college students.

Check eligibility and the sign-up deadline on Google’s page before you rely on it. We could not confirm an end date there. After the year ends, Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month unless you cancel, so set a reminder.

Age Rules

Google AI plans and Gemini in Gmail and Docs are only for users 18 and older, Google’s plan pages say. That puts the student offer and paid features out of reach for school pupils. Our guide on whether Google’s paid Gemini plan is worth it covers prices plan by plan.

By comparison, ChatGPT allows users from 13 with a parent’s consent, as our guide to ChatGPT for students explains. Claude requires users to be at least 18, as our guide to Claude for students covers.

Check What Gemini Tells You

Gemini’s tested accuracy is the weak point. The EBU and BBC found significant issues in 76% of its news answers, against 30% for Perplexity and 36% for ChatGPT. On Artificial Analysis’s knowledge index, Gemini 3.8 Flash scores 30, the lowest of the leading models. Our page on Gemini vs Perplexity covers free features against the stronger sourcing record.

Open every citation in a Deep Research report, and quote the original source rather than Gemini. Gemini Notebook helps here, because its answers point to passages in sources you chose yourself. Our guide to Gemini for research covers how to check reports.

Academic Integrity

Schools set their own rules on AI, and they differ by course. Ask your instructor what is allowed before using Gemini on graded work. Keep your own drafts so you can show how your work developed. Guided Learning is built to teach rather than to write for you.

Your Data as a Student

Gemini’s training follows Keep Activity. With it on, Google may train on your chats and send some to human reviewers, who can keep them for up to three years. Turning it off stops training but also disconnects Gmail and Drive in Gemini.

Where Gemini Runs Short for Students

Accuracy is the main gap, and the free year is limited to eligible college students. Paid features and the student offer are for users 18 and older, and keeping Gmail and Drive in Gemini means leaving training on.

Who Should Use Gemini for Students, and What to Use Instead

Gemini suits college students who qualify for the free year and live in Google Docs. Deep Research, Gemini Notebook and Guided Learning cover research and study, and 5 TB of storage comes with Pro.

Others fit other needs. Perplexity’s tested sourcing is far stronger for research that must be right, and ChatGPT serves younger students with parental consent. Details on Gemini’s plans are in our Gemini review.

How We Research

This guide draws on Google’s Gemini update page, its plan page and its Deep Research help article, read on October 1, 2026. Accuracy figures come from the EBU and BBC and Artificial Analysis, and Guided Learning details from guides, each named where used.

We run no tests with students. Our criteria live on our about page.
