Claude vs Microsoft Copilot is partly a question of where you want Claude to live. In September 2026, Microsoft announced Claude Opus 5.5 for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, alongside OpenAI’s GPT-6 Sol, WindowsForum reported. So Copilot can put Claude’s models inside Office, while Claude itself adds Claude Code, Research and Anthropic’s own data controls.
This page covers Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft’s assistant for consumers and Office, not GitHub Copilot. Our reviews score Claude 3.6 and Microsoft Copilot 3.3.
Claude vs Microsoft Copilot: The Short Answer
Choose Microsoft Copilot if you live in Word, Excel and Outlook; choose Claude for writing, coding and clearer data rules. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month with the Office apps and 1 TB of storage. Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year and includes Claude Code, which leads Artificial Analysis’s coding agent comparison.
On data and ads, Claude is clearer. Claude shows no ads and documents its training opt-out. The free Copilot app shows ads without a Microsoft 365 subscription, and the pages for its updated app list no training switch.

Prices and Plans
Microsoft sells Copilot inside Microsoft 365. Personal costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, Premium $19.99 or $199.99, and Microsoft 365 Pro $99.99 a month. On Family, at $12.99 a month, only the subscription owner gets the AI features.
Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Max costs $100 or $200 a month. At the standard tier, the yearly prices nearly match: $200 for Claude Pro and $199.99 for Microsoft 365 Premium.
Models: Claude Directly or Through Copilot
Copilot offers a choice of models. Microsoft’s privacy overview for the updated app says you can choose between leading AI models, including OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s. The newest frontier models are billed by usage, GeekWire reported.
Claude offers Anthropic’s full lineup. Pro includes Opus 5.5, which scored 58 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index and placed fourth on Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026. Fable models run through usage credits on Pro.
Running Claude’s model inside Copilot is not the same as using Claude. Copilot applies Microsoft’s own app, limits and data terms, while Claude’s own app adds Research, Projects, Claude Code and Anthropic’s settings.
Research, Coding and Email
Research. Claude’s Research returns cited answers on Pro and can read connected Gmail and Google Docs. Microsoft retired Deep Research in the consumer Copilot app on August 18, 2026, and its successor, Researcher, needs Microsoft 365 Premium.
Coding. Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 scores 68 on Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index, as our guide to Claude for coding covers. Copilot’s Code feature has no entry on that index in the sources we read, and Microsoft has announced usage-based billing for it.
Email. Copilot works inside Outlook, while Claude only reads Gmail for Research, as our list of the best AI for email writing explains.
Ads, Training and Data
Claude shows no ads; the free Copilot app does. Microsoft’s privacy controls page says the app may show ads without a Microsoft 365 subscription. Personalized ads there can draw on chat history and memories.
On training, Claude documents a clear opt-out, Help improve Claude, and keeps chats for five years while it is on. Microsoft’s FAQ for the older Copilot app says it trains on conversations unless you opt out, and the pages for the updated app list no training switch. Microsoft says it does not train on Copilot use inside the Microsoft 365 apps on Personal and Family plans.

Who Owns Each
Anthropic PBC is a public benefit corporation, with Amazon and Google holding large minority stakes. Microsoft committed up to $5 billion to Anthropic in November 2025 and owns about 27% of OpenAI. So Copilot runs models from two companies it has invested in.
Where Each One Is Weakest
Claude is weakest on Office and price floor. The sources we read document no Claude integration inside Word or Outlook, there is no plan below Pro, and limits come without published numbers.
Microsoft Copilot is weakest on data clarity and depth. The updated app’s training rules are unclear, the free app’s ads can use your chat history, and cited research needs Premium. Its coding feature has no independent score in our sources.
