Claude vs Gemini is a choice between higher scores on independent boards and a lower price with Google’s apps. Claude’s Opus 5.5 scores 58 on Artificial Analysis’s index against 41 for Gemini 3.8 Flash. Gemini starts at $4.99 a month with storage and writes inside Gmail.

Our reviews score Claude 3.6 and Gemini 3.4. Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, and it already scores higher on Arena’s boards, but it reaches AI Ultra subscribers first. The sections below compare prices, models, accuracy, data and who each one suits.

Claude vs Gemini: The Short Answer

Choose Claude for writing, research and accuracy; choose Gemini for price, storage and Gmail. Claude leads Gemini’s released models on Artificial Analysis’s indexes and on Arena’s text and Search boards. Gemini’s Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB, and Google AI Pro $19.99 with 5 TB.

Both use your chats for training by default, in different ways. Claude keeps chats for five years while training is on. Gemini may send some chats to human reviewers and keep them up to three years, and turning training off disconnects Gmail and Drive.

Prices and Plans

At the entry level, Gemini is far cheaper. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage. Claude has no plan below Pro, which costs about $17 a month on yearly billing. At the standard level, Claude Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and Google AI Pro $19.99 a month with 5 TB.

At the top, Claude Max costs $100 or $200 a month, and Google AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99. Every Google AI plan bills monthly, so a year of Google AI Pro costs $239.88, as our yearly cost breakdown shows.

What the Independent Boards Show

Among released models, Claude leads. Artificial Analysis gives Opus 5.5 58 on its Intelligence Index and Gemini 3.8 Flash 41, and on its knowledge index 46 against 30. On Arena’s text board of September 30, 2026, claude-opus-5.5-high placed fourth and gemini-3.8-flash-high 11th.

Arena’s Search board of August 24 had claude-opus-4-6-search second at 1253 and gemini-3.1-pro-grounding ninth at 1210. The creative-writing board of September 25 had Opus 5.5 first on 487 votes and gemini-3.7-flash-high fourth, as our guide to Claude for writing covers.

⚠️ Gemini 4 Argon changes the picture once it ships. On September 30, gemini-4-argon-high placed first on Arena’s text board at 1525, marked preliminary, and posted the top creative-writing score, 1522. Google says it reaches AI Ultra subscribers and paid API customers first, so it is not in the plans compared here yet.

The EBU and BBC study of October 2025 found significant issues in 76% of Gemini’s news answers. Claude was not part of that study, so it offers no direct comparison.

Ads, Training and Retention

Neither shows ads in chats. Anthropic pledged in February 2026 to keep Claude ad-free on every plan. Google says it does not currently use Gemini chats for ads and will tell users clearly if that changes.

Both train on consumer chats by default. Claude’s opt-out is the Help improve Claude toggle, and with it on, Anthropic keeps chats for five years. Gemini’s training follows Keep Activity, and with it on, some chats go to human reviewers and stay up to three years.

⚠️ Turning Gemini’s training off costs features. With Keep Activity off, Google keeps chats for 72 hours, but Gmail, Drive and other connected Workspace apps stop working in Gemini. With Claude’s toggle off, Anthropic keeps chats for 30 days.

Email and Google Apps

Gemini writes inside Gmail with Help me write on Google AI Plus and higher, and on free personal accounts in the US. Claude can read Gmail, Calendar and Docs for Research on paid plans, but the sources behind our reviews document no drafting inside Gmail. Our list of the best AI for email writing covers both.

Where Each One Is Weakest

Claude is weakest on price and limits. It has no plan below Pro, publishes no message counts, charges extra for Fable models on Pro and keeps chats five years while training is on. Its Gmail support stops at reading.

Gemini is weakest on accuracy and the privacy trade-off. Its released models trail Claude on every independent board here, and the EBU and BBC study flagged 76% of its news answers. Keeping Gmail and Drive in Gemini means leaving training and human review on.
