This Gemini review starts with a price: Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, less than ChatGPT Go at $8. Google AI Pro, at $19.99, bundles 5 TB of storage. The catch sits in the privacy settings. With Keep Activity on, human reviewers read a subset of chats, and Google keeps reviewed chats for up to three years.

On independent boards, the picture is mixed. Google’s newest model placed tenth on Arena’s text board, ahead of OpenAI’s best entry, yet it trails both Anthropic and OpenAI on the Artificial Analysis index. The sections below cover each plan, what it limits, what happens to your chats, and who should pay.

Gemini Review: Is It Worth It in 2026?

Google AI Pro is worth $19.99 a month if you already live in Google’s apps. According to Google’s plan page, it adds Gemini in Gmail and Docs, a 1M-token context window and Gemini in Chrome with auto browse. It also includes 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. For people who work in Gmail and Drive, the case in this Gemini review holds.

For light use, Free or Plus may be enough. Free already includes image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live, with 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro. Plus doubles Free’s usage limits for $4.99 and raises storage to 400 GB. Against both sits the same privacy trade, which the data section below sets out.

What Each Gemini Plan Costs

Google’s plan page, read on September 30, 2026, lists four paid tiers. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro $19.99, and Google AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99. The two Ultra tiers differ in usage: five times Pro’s limits on the cheaper one, twenty times on the pricier one. Each paid plan bundles Google One storage, from 400 GB on Plus to at least 20 TB on Ultra.

Prices moved twice this year. Google added the $99.99 Ultra tier in May 2026 and cut the top tier to $199.99, Android Police reported. That top tier had launched at $249.99 in May 2025, according to TechCrunch. Plus then fell from $7.99 to $4.99 on June 8, according to a September pricing guide from Fello AI. Google’s page lists monthly prices only.

Which Gemini Model You Actually Get

Free and paid plans run different Flash models. Google’s plan page lists 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro on Free. Gemini 3.8 Flash arrived on September 2, and September reports say it reached the app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google’s larger Pro model is still 3.1 Pro, released in February. The Decoder noted on September 2 that Google had shipped three Flash models in six weeks without a new Pro model. Our list of Gemini alternatives also ranks six options with stronger independent scores.

Limits: A Five-Hour Refresh and a Weekly Cap

Google stopped publishing message counts in May. Its help page once listed daily prompt numbers per plan, as ExtremeTech reported in 2025. Since May 17, 2026, limits depend on computing effort, refresh every five hours and stop at a weekly cap. Google now publishes only multipliers: standard on Free, twice that on Plus, four times on Pro. For this Gemini review, we found no published count for any plan.

Context windows differ too: 32K tokens on Free, 128K on Plus and 1M on Pro and Ultra. When a subscriber reaches the limit, Gemini can continue on Flash-Lite, and AI credits buy more usage. Google adds that limits may change without notice, including when capacity runs short.

What Independent Boards Show

Google’s newest model does better on Arena than on composite indexes. On Arena’s text leaderboard dated September 25, 2026, gemini-3.8-flash-high placed tenth at 1492, marked preliminary. That put it above OpenAI’s best entry, 19th at 1483, and below Anthropic’s claude-opus-5.5-high, first at 1509. Gemini 3.1 Pro sat 17th at 1487.

Artificial Analysis draws a different picture. Its model page, read on September 30, gives Gemini 3.8 Flash at high effort 41 on the Intelligence Index. On the same index, Claude Opus 5.5 scores 58 and GPT-6 Astra 53. Gemini 3.1 Pro scores 30. Our Claude vs Gemini vs Perplexity comparison also weighs price and data terms.

⚠️ Artificial Analysis has published two numbers for the same model. Its launch article of September 2 reported 59 for Gemini 3.8 Flash at high effort. The model page now shows 41, on the index as it stands today. Compare figures only within one version of the index, and treat the launch number as out of date.

On knowledge reliability, the gap looks similar. The AA-Omniscience index, which penalizes confident wrong answers, puts Gemini 3.8 Flash at 30 and Gemini 3.1 Pro at 32. Claude Opus 5.5 scores 46 there and GPT-6 Astra 44. Artificial Analysis also calls 3.8 Flash at high effort very verbose. None of these boards tests the Gemini app itself.

Training, Human Review and Ads

One setting, Keep Activity, decides most of what happens to your chats. With it on, Google uses your chats to improve its services, including training AI models. Human reviewers, including trained service providers, read a subset of those chats. Google’s Privacy Hub, updated on September 24, asks users not to enter anything they would not want a reviewer to see.

⚠️ Reviewed chats outlive deletion. Google disconnects them from your account and keeps them for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Other activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, and you can pick 3 or 36 months or keep it indefinitely.

Turning Keep Activity off has a cost. Google then keeps chats for 72 hours and does not train on them unless you send feedback. Temporary chats follow the same 72-hour rule. But Google Workspace connected apps stop working while the setting is off, so using Gemini with Gmail and Drive means leaving it on.

Gemini shows no ads based on your chats, for now. The Privacy Hub states that Gemini chats are not being used to show you ads, and that Google will say so clearly if that changes. Items you add to a Google shopping cart from Gemini go to Google Wallet, however, where Wallet settings govern ads. The Privacy Hub draws no line between Free and paid personal plans; only work and school accounts follow different terms.

Who Runs Gemini, and Refunds

Google LLC provides Gemini outside Europe, and Google Ireland Limited provides it in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, according to the Privacy Notice. Both belong to Alphabet. Business users get separate terms: Gemini Enterprise starts at $21 per seat a month, and Google says it does not train on that customer data.

Google’s plan page says you can cancel anytime, with no refunds for partial billing periods except as required by law. Its AI plans reach more than 140 countries and territories, while some features, such as Gemini Spark, reach only select countries.

Who Gemini Suits, and Who It Doesn’t

Gemini suits people whose work already runs on Gmail, Docs and Drive. Pro puts Gemini inside those apps and adds 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. Buyers who want a cheap step up get Plus at $4.99, below ChatGPT Go’s $8, as our ChatGPT review notes.

It suits people less when privacy or top model scores come first. Using Gemini with Workspace means leaving Keep Activity on, with human review of some chats. And on the Artificial Analysis index, Claude and OpenAI models score higher, as our Claude review sets out.

Who should pay for Google AI Pro and who should skip it, by what matters most to them

What changed after our September check. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026, and its free plan holds 50 sources per notebook. Google also announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, starting with AI Ultra, while its plan pages say Google AI plans are for users 18 and older. In an EBU and BBC study of October 2025, however, 76% of Gemini’s news answers had a significant issue. Eligible college students can get a free year of Google AI Pro in the US, as our guide to Gemini for students covers.

How We Research

This Gemini review draws on Google’s own documents, read on September 30, 2026. They include the plan page, the Help Center page on limits and upgrades and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. Price history comes from Android Police, TechCrunch and Fello AI, each named where used.

Rankings come from Arena’s text board of September 25 and the Artificial Analysis comparison and model pages. We do not run our own tests. The criteria behind every score live on our about page.

Cheap entry, costly privacy trade

Plus costs $4.99 and Pro $19.99 with 5 TB of storage, and Gemini works inside Gmail, Docs and Chrome. Against it, human reviewers read some chats and keep them up to three years, and Workspace features need Keep Activity on. Artificial Analysis also scores Google’s models below Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s.

The Verdict

The verdict of this Gemini review: pay for Pro if Gmail, Docs and Drive are where you work. At $19.99 it adds Gemini to those apps, a 1M-token context and 5 TB of storage. Plus at $4.99 suits lighter use.

Weigh the privacy trade first. Workspace help needs Keep Activity on, which means training and human review of some chats. On the Artificial Analysis index, Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra both score higher. Our page on Gemini vs Grok covers price, coding agents and real-time X.
