We do not run our own lab tests. Instead, we verify claims against primary sources: official documentation, pricing pages, independent audits, public incident reports, and published benchmarks. Every important number in our articles links to a named source.
How we rate AI tools
Each product is scored across five criteria. The final rating is the simple average of these five scores.
- Capabilities & Features — What the tool can actually do, based on official documentation and publicly available information.
- Output Quality & Reliability — Consistency of results, known limitations, and real-world performance signals from public sources.
- Ease of Use — Learning curve, interface clarity, and how quickly a new user can get meaningful results.
- Pricing & Value — Real cost of ownership, including renewals, usage limits, and hidden restrictions — not just the introductory price.
- Transparency & Trust — Clarity of data policies, publishing of system limitations, ownership transparency, and history of incidents.
The final score is the arithmetic mean of the five criteria. We publish the individual scores so readers can see where a tool is strong and where it is weak.
How we choose our Top 5
Our Top 5 list is not simply the five highest-scoring products. We also consider:
- Breadth of useful features for common real-world tasks
- Stability and track record
- Value across different user types (individuals, freelancers, teams)
- Transparency of pricing and limitations
This means a specialist tool can score higher than a product in our Top 5 in one specific area, yet still not make the overall list. When this happens, we explain why in the review.
